In Mac discussions, it often means the Apple T2 Security Chip, a separate chip used in certain Intel Macs. Apple-silicon Macs instead integrate security functions—including a Secure Enclave—into the main Apple system-on-chip (SoC). The Secure Enclave is a subsystem, not another name for the T2.
What does “Apple security chip” mean?
Apple’s technical documentation does not use “Apple security chip” as one unambiguous name for a single component. The phrase most often refers to the Apple T2 Security Chip when someone is discussing certain Intel-based Macs. More broadly, it can mean the security hardware and functions built into Apple devices.

To be precise, name the component and the Mac architecture: an Intel Mac with a T2 has a separate T2 chip, while a Mac with Apple silicon has security features integrated into its main SoC. Apple describes both T2 Macs and Apple-silicon Macs as having a Secure Enclave. Apple’s hardware security overview and Secure Enclave documentation explain the distinction.

| Mac type | Where security hardware resides | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Intel Mac with T2 | A separate Apple T2 Security Chip alongside the Intel processor; the T2 contains an embedded Secure Enclave. | The T2 is a separate ARM-based SoC. |
| Mac with Apple silicon | Security functions, including the Secure Enclave, are integrated into the Apple SoC. | It does not use a separate T2 chip. |
The Secure Enclave is an isolated security subsystem with its own Boot ROM and AES engine. It is not the whole T2 chip: the T2 is a separate SoC that includes a Secure Enclave, while Apple-silicon SoCs integrate the enclave as part of the main chip.

What does Apple’s security hardware do?
Establishes trust during startup
Apple describes Boot ROM as a hardware root of trust for secure boot. On a Mac with T2, trust for macOS secure boot begins with the T2. This is a description of the startup trust chain, not a promise that a Mac can never be attacked.
Helps protect encryption keys and data
The Secure Enclave supports secure key generation and storage for data-at-rest encryption. Apple says a dedicated AES engine handles inline encryption and decryption, with a special channel supplying keying material without exposing it to the application processor or the overall operating system.

- The numeric keypad is also ideal for spreadsheets and finance applications.
- It’s wireless and features a rechargeable battery that will power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges.
Processes biometric data
Apple says the Secure Enclave protects and evaluates biometric data for features such as Touch ID, Face ID, and Optic ID. Which biometric feature applies depends on the device; these examples do not mean every Mac has every feature.

The Secure Enclave is designed to isolate sensitive data from the main processor, including in circumstances where the application-processor kernel is compromised. Isolation is a security design goal, not a guarantee against every attack or compromise.

What startup security settings apply to a T2 Mac?
On a Mac with the T2 chip, Apple’s Startup Security Utility documents three policies: Full Security, Medium Security, and No Security. Full Security is the default policy in Apple’s documentation. The available policy and its effect depend on the Mac and its configuration, so these choices should not be assumed to apply identically to Apple-silicon Macs. See Apple’s Startup Security Utility guide for a Mac with the Apple T2 Security Chip.

Security features vary across Apple SoC generations. For example, Apple says Secure Page Table Monitor is supported on A15-or-later and M2-or-later SoCs, replacing Page Protection Layer on supported platforms. That is a generation-specific feature statement, not a general description of every Mac or every Apple security chip. Consult Apple’s Apple SoC security feature table when asking about a particular chip.
