Apple Pencil tips wear with use and can be replaced. There is no fixed replacement interval in Apple’s cited guidance: replace the tip when wear makes it necessary, and check your exact Pencil model before buying a replacement. For Apple Pencil (2nd generation), the documented swap is to unscrew the old tip and screw on the new one.
When should you replace an Apple Pencil tip?
Apple says, “With use, the tip of Apple Pencil will wear.” Its safety guidance gives no numeric lifespan or replacement schedule, so there is no official number of weeks or months to follow. Dirt and small particles can cause excessive wear or damage, making regular care important. Apple’s safety and handling guidance describes the wear risk but does not set a threshold for replacement.

- Place the replacement tip on the exposed threaded post and turn it clockwise until tight. Stop when it no longer turns easily; do not force it.
See iFixit’s Apple Pencil (2nd Generation) tip replacement guide. The cited instructions are specific to that model; do not assume every Pencil generation or third-party tip uses identical details.

Are replacement tips compatible with every Apple Pencil?
No universal compatibility is established here. Apple’s compatibility page lists supported iPads separately for Apple Pencil Pro, Apple Pencil (USB-C), Apple Pencil (2nd generation), and Apple Pencil (1st generation). Pencil-to-iPad compatibility does not by itself prove that a particular replacement tip fits that Pencil.
- Identify your exact Apple Pencil model or generation.
- Check the replacement listing for explicit compatibility with that model, along with seller or source authenticity, pack contents, and return terms.
- Use Apple’s current Pencil and iPad compatibility list to confirm that your Pencil works with your iPad. The page’s supported-device lineup can change.
Apple’s page includes software minimums for Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C), as well as different iPad lists for older Pencil generations. Consult the live list rather than relying on an old compatibility table.

How should you care for the tip?
- Keep the tip clean; dirt and small particles may cause excessive wear or damage, according to Apple’s safety guidance.
- Use Apple Pencil on iPad. Apple’s guidance says not to use it on other surfaces.
What if the Apple Pencil still does not work after replacing the tip?
A new tip will not necessarily resolve every problem. First confirm that you have the right Pencil model and a compatible tip, and that the replacement is fitted correctly. Keep the tip clean. If the Pencil remains unresponsive, follow Apple’s connection and pairing guidance, which covers identifying the Pencil, supported iPads, and connecting and pairing.
