Neither Apple Pay nor Google Pay is universally better for online shopping. Both can reduce how often you enter card details, but the option you can use depends on what the merchant offers, your device and browser, your region, and whether your card and wallet setup are eligible. Their payment credentials also work differently, so it is more useful to compare those paths than to declare one wallet safer in every situation.
How Apple Pay and Google Pay protect card details
Both providers describe safeguards intended to limit exposure of ordinary card details, but they do not describe one identical payment method. The credential used can depend on the wallet, checkout integration, card, and eligibility.

Apple Pay: device account number and dynamic security code
For online and in-app payments, Apple says the app or website receives a Device Account Number and a transaction-specific dynamic security code rather than the actual payment card number. The issuer, bank, or payment network can validate the code. Apple also says payment information is encrypted and re-encrypted with a developer-specific key before it is sent to the developer or processor. A website offering Apple Pay must verify its domain. Apple’s security and privacy overview explains the consumer-facing protections, while its Apple Platform Security documentation describes card payments in more detail.

Google describes a virtual card as a randomly generated number that replaces the actual card number for online or in-app purchases made with Chrome autofill. For a merchant’s Google Pay web API integration, the returned signed and encrypted payment data may contain either PAN or tokenized card credentials. The tokenized form consists of a device PAN and cryptogram, and availability depends on the merchant’s configuration and the shopper’s card and eligibility. See Google’s explanation of payment-info protection and its Google Pay API FAQ.

These descriptions support a comparison of credential protection, not a blanket promise about fraud, account compromise, issuer declines, or purchase disputes. Google’s integration guidance says merchants should apply their usual risk checks and give PAN_ONLY transactions appropriate 3-D Secure treatment; Google’s own fraud and risk tools do not replace merchant risk management. Google’s API tutorial covers the PAN_ONLY flow.
Which wallet works with your browser and device?
Browser support is only one part of eligibility. A supported browser does not guarantee that a particular checkout will display a wallet button: the merchant must implement it, and the shopper still needs an eligible wallet, card, region, and device setup.
Apple Pay on the web
Apple documents Safari web integrations through Apple Pay JS and the Payment Request API. A participating website must meet Apple Pay requirements, including HTTPS, merchant registration, and domain verification. Apple’s Apple Pay on the Web documentation describes these integration requirements.

There is also a cross-device route under specific conditions: Apple says the current Apple Pay JS SDK can start a transaction in a third-party browser on a computer or tablet and complete it using an Apple Pay-capable iPhone or iPad running iOS 18 or iPadOS 18 and later. The flow uses a scannable code and encrypted relay, and requires a compatible merchant implementation and authorizing device. It is not the same as assuming Apple Pay works as a direct, one-device checkout in every browser. Apple’s Platform Security guidance describes this cross-device flow.
Google Pay on the web
Google lists Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge, Opera, and UCWeb UC Browser for its web API setup. The merchant page must use HTTPS with a TLS domain-validated certificate. Google also advises merchants to test current supported browsers on desktop, Android, and iOS. These are integration-support statements, not a guarantee that every browser-device-card combination will offer Google Pay to every shopper. Google’s setup guide and integration checklist set out the requirements and tests.
Google notes that tokenized cards are available only in some countries; its checklist also calls out Android and Google Play services conditions for tokenized-card testing. Availability can therefore differ from the general browser list.

What determines whether a wallet appears at checkout?
The merchant’s checkout controls which payment methods are offered for that purchase. Apple’s web documentation describes merchant registration and implementation; Google likewise directs merchants to test their integrations and check whether a shopper is ready to pay. Provider support for a browser or API does not mean every store has added the wallet. Apple’s web documentation and Google’s integration checklist explain the merchant-side role.

- Merchant: Does this store offer Apple Pay or Google Pay for this checkout?
- Wallet and card: Is the wallet set up, and is the card eligible with its issuer?
- Region: Is the payment method or tokenized-card route available where you are?
- Browser and device: Is the current browser supported, and can the device complete the required authorization?
- Google Pay readiness privacy setting: Google says participating sites and apps may be told whether Google Pay is set up on your device so they can decide whether to offer it. You can opt out in Google Pay privacy settings, but Google warns this may affect your ability to transact with some merchants. Google’s help page explains the setting.
Convenience: fewer fields, but no universal speed winner
At a supported checkout, either wallet can spare you from manually entering card details. The practical difference is whether your preferred wallet is already configured with an eligible card and whether checkout requires an authorization handoff—for example, to another Apple device in the cross-device flow. If both wallets are available, choose the one you have set up and can authorize comfortably. There is no basis here for claiming that either is always faster; the merchant’s checkout and the shopper’s setup matter.

What the providers say about transaction privacy
Apple says it retains anonymous transaction information such as approximate purchase amount, app developer or name, approximate time, and whether the transaction succeeded, to improve Apple Pay and related services. Apple also says apps and websites using Apple Pay in Safari must have a privacy policy. Apple’s security and privacy overview describes these points.
Google says transaction data may be used to facilitate transactions, show transaction history, resolve issues, and provide Google Pay features. As noted above, participating sites and apps may also be told whether Google Pay is set up on the device; users can opt out, with possible effects on transactions. Google’s payment-info help page describes these uses and controls.
These provider statements describe particular data and uses; they are not a complete independent audit of either company’s privacy practices. They do not support the simplified claim that one collects no payment-related information while the other tracks everything.
Which should you choose for an online purchase?
- Choose the wallet the merchant offers if your eligible card is already set up and you can complete its authorization step.
- Prefer Apple Pay when its Apple-specific setup suits your checkout, including the documented cross-device route where the merchant and authorizing Apple device support it.
- Prefer Google Pay when its button is available and your card and account are eligible; do not assume a listed browser guarantees tokenized-card availability in your country.
- If neither button appears, use another payment method or check merchant support, region, card eligibility, browser, device, and wallet setup before troubleshooting further.
Neither wallet’s card-data protections guarantee that a purchase will be approved, prevent every kind of fraud, or determine how a merchant or issuer handles a dispute. Treat checkout availability, credential protection, and purchase or dispute protections as separate questions.
