Apple Music Not Working on iPhone? Troubleshooting Steps

Check Apple service status and your connection first, then follow the right fix for cellular playback, missing songs, greyed-out tracks, downloads, or computer sync errors.

If Apple Music won’t play on your iPhone, first check Apple’s System Status page and confirm that the phone can reach the internet. Then narrow the problem down: cellular playback, missing library items, greyed-out tracks, downloads, and music synced from a computer each have different causes and fixes.

Why won’t Apple Music play songs on my iPhone?

Start by checking whether Apple Music or the iPhone’s internet connection is the problem. Apple’s connection guidance includes Apple Music and recommends checking the System Status page for your country or region. Check the live listing when troubleshooting; service status can change.

  1. Check general internet access. Open a web page on the iPhone. If it does not load, try another device on the same Wi-Fi network.
  2. Compare devices and networks. If other devices connect to the same Wi-Fi but the iPhone does not, check the iPhone’s connection and whether a VPN or third-party security app is interfering. If no devices can connect to that Wi-Fi, turn the existing router off and on. If the connection still fails, contact your internet provider. If another network works, ask the administrator or provider of the affected network for help.
  3. Update iOS and check the clock. Install the latest iOS version available for your iPhone. Make sure the date and time are correct for your time zone, or set them automatically.
  4. Try a different network. If Apple Music works there, the original network may be blocking or disrupting the connection.

These checks help distinguish a service or network problem from an account or library issue. Avoid changing Sync Library settings until you know whether the app can connect.

Why is Apple Music not working on cellular data?

If songs play on Wi-Fi but not over mobile data, check that Music is allowed to use cellular data. Apple’s iPhone guide identifies these settings:

#1 Best Overall
Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
  • In Settings > Cellular, make sure cellular data is enabled for Music.
  • In Settings > Apps > Music, enable Cellular Data and review the download and audio-quality options.

High Quality, Lossless, and High-Resolution Lossless use significantly more cellular data than High Efficiency, and playback may take longer to start. If mobile playback is slow or you want to limit data use, check the selected audio quality as well as the app’s cellular permission.

Why are songs missing from my Apple Music library?

If the subscription feature or much of the library is missing, confirm that Apple Music is signed in with the Apple Account used for the subscription. Sync Library requires an Apple Music subscription or iTunes Match and the same Apple Account as that subscription. On iPhone, confirm the account in Apple Music, then go to Settings > Music and turn on Sync Library.

If songs are missing across devices, check that each device uses the same Apple Account, has Sync Library enabled, and is connected to the internet. If your library originates on a Mac or PC, check its cloud status there and update the cloud library from that computer.

Turning Sync Library off and back on is not a harmless first step: turning it off removes downloaded music from the iPhone, and a large library can take longer to sync. Back up a personal music library before making changes. Apple’s guidance is explicit: “Apple Music isn’t a backup service.” See Use Sync Library with your Apple Music subscription and If songs are missing from your music library after you turn on Sync Library.

Why are Apple Music songs greyed out?

A greyed-out track does not necessarily mean Apple Music is down or Sync Library is broken. Check the individual song’s displayed message and consider these causes:

  • Wrong purchase account: For a purchased track, check which Apple Account bought it and redownload it if needed.
  • Explicit-content restrictions: Restrictions can make some tracks unavailable.
  • Hidden song: Check whether the track has been hidden.
  • Catalog change: If a track says “No Longer Available,” it may have been removed from the Apple Music catalog. Search for another version.
  • Missing local file: If the item came from a file on your computer, locate or reimport it from its original source.
  • Regional availability: A track may not be available in your region.

Apple lists these song-specific possibilities in If songs are missing from your music library after you turn on Sync Library.

How do I listen offline or fix a stuck download?

Streaming requires an internet connection. Offline playback works only for music that has been downloaded to the iPhone. Apple’s current guide says to turn on Sync Library before downloading tracks from the Apple Music catalog; Music settings also include Automatic Downloads and storage management options. See Add and download music from Apple Music.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Distinguish removing a download from deleting a song from the library: removing the device’s downloaded copy affects offline listening, while deleting a library item is a different action. If you cannot download, check the connection, Sync Library setting, and available device storage.

What if music synced from Finder or iTunes will not play?

Music copied from a Mac through Finder or iTunes is a separate troubleshooting case from Apple Music streaming and catalog downloads. Apple’s sync-error guidance covers errors -5000, -69, 13010, and 13014 when syncing music from a Mac to an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

  1. Update the Mac and iPhone software.
  2. Consolidate media files on the computer.
  3. Check whether third-party security software is interfering with the sync.
  4. Try syncing a few tracks at a time to identify a problematic song.

If a purchased track is the problem, delete it and redownload it. For a track copied from a CD or another source, import it again from that original source. Apple’s steps are in If you see error -5000, -69, 13010, or 13014 when syncing music from your Mac.
