This shortlist selects 15 of them for blog publishers, including adjacent formats such as newsletters, magazines, podcasts, and photography sites. Ghost’s categories describe each theme’s intended format; they are not a comparative quality ranking.
Which free Ghost theme fits your publication?
Start with the way readers will use your site: a text-led blog, image-heavy magazine, newsletter archive, or podcast. Ghost’s setup guide offers examples for general blogs and newsletters, news and magazines, photography, and large archives. Use the table to narrow the options, then preview a candidate with your own content before activating it.

How to choose and evaluate a theme
Match the layout to your content
- Text-led publishing: prioritize readable type, clear article navigation, and a layout that gives longer posts room.
- Image-led publishing: look for a presentation that suits photography and the image proportions you actually use.
- Newsletters: consider how the theme presents the publication and its past issues, not just the landing page.
- Podcasts or archives: check that episodes or older material are easy to browse and understand.
These are selection checks, not claims that every theme has been independently tested. Preview with representative posts, images, and navigation before making a choice.

Check usability and compatibility
Ghost’s marketplace submission standards include responsive design, compatibility validation, keyboard navigation, image text alternatives, and structured SEO markup. Treat these as useful things to check rather than a guarantee that every listed theme has been independently evaluated for your site.
- Preview on a phone as well as a desktop-sized screen.
- Navigate menus and links using a keyboard.
- Check that meaningful images have useful text alternatives.
- Confirm that the theme behaves as expected with your Ghost setup and content.
Install or switch a Ghost theme
Install an official theme
- In Ghost Admin, open Settings → Site → Theme.
- Select Change theme to browse and preview official themes.
- Choose a theme and select Install, then Activate.
Ghost says a new publication is installed with one of its free official themes. In the Installed view, you can see the active theme and previous installations, download installed theme copies, or switch back to a previously installed theme. See Ghost’s theme installation guide.

Upload a premium or custom theme
Use Upload theme in the theme settings and provide the theme’s .zip file. The upload route depends on hosting-plan limits. Ghost’s help page says that on Ghost(Pro), the Starter plan supports official themes only; check your current plan and the theme’s terms before purchasing or planning an upload. Ghost notes that premium themes are typically more complex than its free official themes, and support may be available from the theme developer. Purchases of official themes take place outside Ghost’s marketplace.
Make small styling changes
For light visual adjustments, Ghost describes Code Injection as a way to add custom CSS without editing theme files directly. Structural changes require editing theme files—locally or in Ghost Admin—and replacing the theme after saving. If you only need a small appearance change, avoid taking on theme-file maintenance unnecessarily.

The marketplace labels all 18 entries observed on October 5, 2026 as free. This article selects 15 and does not rank them by performance, popularity, or quality: no comparable figures for those measures are established by the cited Ghost sources. A theme’s marketplace category indicates its intended content type, not how well it will suit a particular publication. Ghost also lists paid themes, which can be an alternative when a specialized design is needed, but their price, terms, and plan compatibility should be checked at the time of purchase.
