Both Apple Music and Spotify now offer lossless streaming, but their top specifications differ—and those numbers alone do not tell you whether you will hear a difference. Apple Music offers ALAC up to 24-bit/192 kHz; Spotify Premium Lossless offers FLAC up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz. Spotify also offers a separate Very High lossy setting up to 320 kbit/s. Your plan, settings, audio route, and the recording itself all matter.
How Apple Music and Spotify audio quality compare
| Option | Documented format ceiling | What that means in practice |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Music Lossless | ALAC, from 16-bit/44.1 kHz to 24-bit/192 kHz across the catalog described by Apple Support. | Hi-Res playback depends on compatible equipment and a suitable connection. Bluetooth does not carry the lossless signal. |
| Spotify Premium Lossless | FLAC up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz, according to Spotify Support. | Requires an eligible Premium plan, supported app and device, the lossless setting, and a playback route that supports it. Availability varies by market. |
| Spotify Premium Very High | Up to 320 kbit/s, lossy, according to Spotify Support. | This is not lossless. A high-bitrate lossy stream may nevertheless sound transparent to many listeners in ordinary listening; no perceptible difference is guaranteed. |
These are format ceilings, not a promise that every track or playback route reaches the maximum. Spotify announced Premium Lossless on September 10, 2025, and said in an October 6, 2025 update that it was available to Premium users in more than 50 markets. That is a dated availability statement, not confirmation of availability in every country today: Spotify’s announcement and update.

Can you hear the difference between lossless and lossy?
Sometimes a listener may detect a difference in a controlled comparison, but the format label by itself does not establish that a particular listener will hear one. Bit depth and sample rate describe the audio data; they are not a hearing test or a guarantee of improved sound for a given person, recording, and setup.

Apple Support characterizes the distinction this way: “While the difference between AAC and lossless audio is virtually indistinguishable.” That is Apple’s statement, not a universal scientific finding. Controlled studies likewise apply to the material and conditions they tested, rather than every listener or a direct comparison of the two services.

- App for EQ Customization: Download the soundcore app to tailor your sound using the customizable EQ, with 22 presets, or adjust it yourself. You can also switch between 3 modes: ANC, Normal, and Transparency, and relax with white noise.
What the cited listening tests establish
- The Audio Engineering Society record describes a subjective test comparing AAC-LC at 320 kbps with an uncompressed reference. It used the ITU-R BS.1116 method and 12 audio samples spanning orchestral, jazz, vocal music, and speech. The 12 is the number of samples, not the number of listeners or a general audibility rate: Audio Engineering Society paper record.
- BBC Research & Development published “A subjective evaluation of high bitrate coding of music,” examining whether listeners were likely to perceive a difference between lossless FLAC and AAC at 320 kbps. Its findings concern that controlled test and its materials, not proof that no one can ever hear a difference or that one streaming service must sound better: BBC Research & Development paper.
Why the playback route matters
Lossless playback depends on more than choosing a quality setting. Plan eligibility, app and device support, the source file available for a track, output connection, and any processing in the chain can affect what reaches your ears. Bluetooth compresses the signal according to the cited Apple and Spotify guidance. Spotify recommends Wi-Fi and wired headphones or speakers connected without Bluetooth for its lossless experience.
- Check the service and setting: make sure the plan and app support the lossless option and that it is enabled.
- Check the route: Bluetooth is not a lossless connection. A wired connection may require a compatible USB DAC or audio adapter, depending on the source device.
- Check processing: EQ, spatial processing, and loudness normalization can change presentation independently of codec. Spotify says it applies loudness normalization regardless of format.
More capable equipment is not a prerequisite for enjoying either service, and buying new hardware does not guarantee that you will hear a difference. It matters chiefly when you want to test a lossless signal without Bluetooth in the path.

- Block the World, Keep the Music: Four built-in mics work together to filter out background noise — whether you're in a packed office, on a crowded commute, or moving through a busy street — so every beat comes through clean and clear. (Not available in AUX-in mode.)
- Two Ways to Hear More: BassUp technology delivers deep, punchy bass and crisp highs in wireless mode — then step it up further by plugging in the included AUX cable to unlock Hi‑Res certified audio for studio-level clarity.
- 40 Hours. 5-Minute Top-Up: With ANC on, a single charge keeps you listening through days of commutes and long-haul flights. Running low? Just 5 minutes plugged in gives you 4 more hours — so you're never stuck waiting.
- Two Devices, Zero Hassle: Stay connected to your laptop and phone at the same time. Audio switches automatically to whichever device needs you — so a call never interrupts your flow, and getting back to your playlist is just as easy. Designed for commuters and remote workers who move smoothly between work and personal listening throughout the day.
- Your Sound, Your Rules: The soundcore app puts everything at your fingertips — dials your ideal EQ with presets or build your own, flip between ANC, Normal, and Transparency modes on the fly, or wind down with built-in white noise. One app, total control.
How to compare the services fairly
- Choose the same recording and version. Catalog versions and masters can differ, so note if you cannot match them.
- Match perceived loudness. A small volume difference can influence which version seems clearer or better.
- Remove other differences where possible. Turn off EQ or effects that are not matched between apps, and account for Spotify’s loudness normalization.
- Use a suitable connection. For a lossless-specific comparison, use Wi-Fi and wired headphones or speakers on a supported non-Bluetooth route.
- Hide the labels and repeat. Switch blindly if feasible and try multiple rounds rather than relying on one sighted impression. The AES study’s use of ITU-R BS.1116 illustrates controlled subjective testing, but it does not prescribe a validated consumer protocol for comparing these services.
- Describe your result narrowly. For example: “I could reliably distinguish these versions on this setup,” or “I could not.” That does not establish how other listeners will fare or that one service always sounds better.
What to take from the specifications
Apple Music has the higher published maximum sample rate; Spotify Premium Lossless tops out at 24-bit/44.1 kHz. Spotify’s Very High setting is lossy but reaches 320 kbit/s. None of those figures alone predicts a reliable audible difference. A fair comparison depends on matching the recording, loudness, processing, and playback route—and on what you can actually distinguish in repeated listening.
