Apple Mail on Mac already offers Apple Intelligence summaries, Smart Reply and Writing Tools on compatible systems. The newer development is Apple’s announced expansion of Siri and Apple Intelligence for macOS 27: Siri is intended to use context from emails and what is on screen, take supported actions across apps, and help draft email in a user’s usual style. Apple announced those capabilities on June 8, 2026, and they were in developer testing—not generally available as finished public features—as of August 16, 2026.
What Apple Mail can already do with AI
Apple’s Mac user guide documents Apple Intelligence features in Mail, including summaries and Smart Reply. Apple’s macOS Sequoia feature documentation also describes those Mail capabilities. They are assistance tools within the existing app, not a fully autonomous inbox manager.
- Summaries: Mail can condense a message or thread so you can scan its main points. Treat a summary as a shortcut, not as the authoritative version of the email.
- Smart Reply: Mail can suggest contextually relevant response text. Review and edit it before sending; it is a suggestion, not correspondence sent on your behalf.
- Writing Tools: Apple Intelligence can help proofread, rewrite, summarize or change the tone of selected text while composing. Available controls can depend on the macOS version and context.
Apple’s current instructions are at Use Apple Intelligence in Mail on Mac. The company’s macOS Sequoia feature document describes the earlier Mail features.
If the features are missing
Apple advises using the latest compatible macOS and turning on Apple Intelligence. You also need a supported Mac, and availability can depend on language, region, account settings and the particular feature. Check Apple’s current support instructions for the exact settings path for your installed macOS version; labels and locations can change between releases. If a feature remains unavailable, check whether the Mac is compatible, Apple Intelligence is enabled, and the language or region is supported. A work-managed Mac may also be subject to administrator restrictions.

What Apple announced for macOS 27
At WWDC on June 8, 2026, Apple announced a next generation of Apple Intelligence, including expanded capabilities across Mail and Messages. Its announcements describe a broader role for Siri, rather than simply a new AI button inside Mail.
- Personal context: Siri is intended to find information across personal content, including emails.
- Screen awareness: Siri is intended to understand content displayed on the Mac and answer questions about it.
- Personalized drafting: Apple says Siri can help draft email in a user’s usual punctuation, tone and style. That is a stated capability, not a guarantee that every draft will sound like its author or be accurate.
- Actions across apps: Siri is intended to carry out more systemwide actions. Specific workflows depend on what Apple supports and, where relevant, on app integration.
Apple’s announcements are available in its next-generation Apple Intelligence announcement and its Siri AI announcement. Apple’s macOS developer page identifies macOS 27 as the platform for the new generation.

Mail features versus Siri features
The distinction matters: summaries and Smart Reply are existing features in Mail; personal-context search, screen awareness and cross-app actions are part of Apple’s announced Siri direction. An email could provide context for another task, but that does not establish that Siri will automatically extract every task, delete messages or manage an inbox without review. Apple’s public announcements do not justify treating those broader workflows as guaranteed features.
What is available now, and what is still pending?
| Status as of August 16, 2026 | What it means |
|---|---|
| Available, subject to requirements | Mail summaries and Smart Reply, along with other Apple Intelligence tools such as Writing Tools, on supported Macs and software versions. |
| Announced and in developer testing | The newer Siri and macOS 27 capabilities, including personal context, screen awareness and personalized email drafting. Developer testing is not the same as a finished public release. |
| Not safe to promise | Specific automated inbox workflows—such as automatically deleting mail or turning every message into a reminder—unless Apple documents or demonstrates them in a stable public release. |
Apple announced the new Siri features on June 8, 2026, and said they were available for developer testing. The broader macOS 27 release was forthcoming as of August 16, 2026. Features, completeness and regional support can change before public availability; do not install a developer beta on a primary work Mac on the assumption that it will be production-ready.

Which Macs and users can use Apple Intelligence?
Apple’s announced compatibility information includes Macs with Apple silicon, starting with M1, and lists the MacBook Neo with A18 Pro in its cross-platform compatibility information. That does not mean every Mac that can run macOS 27 can use every Apple Intelligence feature. Hardware, language, region and feature-specific requirements still apply. Apple also notes regional restrictions, including conditions affecting availability in the European Union and China; check the current terms for your location and language.
Apple’s compatibility statement is in its Apple Intelligence availability announcement. Existing Mail remains usable on Macs that do not support Apple Intelligence, but those Macs will not gain the Intelligence features simply by running Mail.

How Apple describes AI privacy—and what to check
Apple says Apple Intelligence combines on-device processing with Private Cloud Compute for requests that need more processing. That means it would be inaccurate to assume every operation happens locally. Apple’s technical paper describes an approximately 3-billion-parameter on-device model and a larger server-based model used with Private Cloud Compute; those technical details do not, by themselves, establish the handling of every Mail or Siri request in every release.
Apple’s technical paper on Apple Intelligence foundation models describes the architecture. For a particular feature, consult Apple’s current privacy information and check whether processing is on-device or cloud-assisted, what information is sent, whether content is retained, and whether language, region or enterprise settings affect access. Apple’s privacy statements are Apple’s claims about its system; they should not be read as a promise that email content never leaves a device.

Should you wait for macOS 27 or use another email app?
If you already have a compatible Apple-silicon Mac and mainly want summaries, suggested replies and writing assistance, try Mail’s existing Apple Intelligence features first. If your main reason to wait is Siri’s deeper email context or personalized drafting, wait for the public macOS 27 release rather than treating developer-testing software as finished. Apple Mail is included with macOS; no separate Mail purchase is identified.
| Option | May suit you if… | Trade-off to check |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Mail | You want a native Mac app, existing Apple Intelligence assistance and integration with Apple’s system features. | It may not offer the more aggressive triage, automation or specialized workflows you want. Mail also depends on the behavior and capabilities of the underlying account provider. |
| Spark Mail | You want a third-party client with AI-oriented assistance and inbox-management features. | Check current pricing, mailbox permissions and how the service processes email. The cited App Store listings establish the product, not a dependable current price: Spark Mail AI Email Assistant and Spark Mail AI Email Inbox. |
| Superhuman Mail | You value a productivity-focused, keyboard-driven workflow and AI-assisted drafting involving Gmail or Outlook. | It is a separate premium service; verify its current subscription cost, trial terms and data handling before signing up. The cited Mac App Store listing does not establish a reliable current price. |
| Canary Mail | You want a dedicated AI-oriented email client with an Apple-platform focus. | Check mailbox permissions, current pricing and whether its processing model meets your needs; the cited App Store listing does not establish a current price or a fully local-only workflow. |
A third-party app can be worth evaluating if you need cross-platform support, advanced snoozing, team workflows, specialized Gmail handling or more automation than Mail provides. Before connecting a mailbox, examine the app’s permissions and data-processing policy. Siri’s ability to complete an action may also depend on whether the relevant app supports it; do not assume every third-party app can participate.
