The 2026 claim comes from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo’s May 2024 report about a large foldable Apple notebook using an M5-generation chip. Later reporting summarized by MacRumors says the project may have slipped toward 2029, with Apple still undecided about whether it should be a MacBook, an iPad or a hybrid. Treat 2026 as an old, unconfirmed forecast—not a scheduled launch.
Where the M5 and 2026 rumor came from
Kuo’s May 2024 report described a foldable Apple notebook with an unfolded display of approximately 20.2 inches or 18.8 inches. The larger version would fold to roughly the footprint of a conventional 14- or 15-inch laptop; the smaller option would fold to something closer to a 13- or 14-inch laptop. The report associated the device with an Apple-designed M5-generation processor and said Apple wanted the panel to be as crease-free as possible.
The report also identified LG as a possible panel supplier and discussed mass production in late 2025—an older forecast that should not be mistaken for a current production schedule. See the original reports from MacRumors and Macworld.
| Rumored detail | What was reported |
|---|---|
| Unfolded display | About 20.2 inches or 18.8 inches |
| Processor | An M5-generation Apple chip |
| Display goal | Make the fold as crease-free as possible |
| Earlier timing | 2026 or nearby, depending on the report |
| Panel supplier discussed | LG, in the older supply-chain reporting |
What “crease-free” really means
“Crease-free” is an overstatement if it is read as a promise of an invisible fold in every situation. The original wording described minimizing the crease as much as possible. A foldable OLED can look nearly flat in some conditions while still showing a line at certain angles or under direct light.

Reducing that line requires the panel, protective layers, hinge, support plate and internal frame to work together. A larger bending radius can reduce stress on the OLED, but it generally demands more room. A hinge designed to spread the bend over a wider area can add parts, thickness, weight and mechanical complexity. Those trade-offs help explain why a near-crease-free design could be expensive and difficult to manufacture.
- Panel: Must tolerate repeated bending without visible damage or uneven pixels.
- Hinge: Controls how tightly and smoothly the screen folds.
- Support structure: Keeps the open display rigid and protects it from pressure.
- Protective surface: Must balance scratch resistance, touch performance and flexibility.
Is a 2026 launch still expected?
No reliable Apple schedule supports that conclusion. The M5/2026 report was published in May 2024, and Apple has never confirmed the product, name, price or launch date. More recent reporting collected in MacRumors’ foldable MacBook guide points to a possible delay toward 2029 because of display cost and weight.

A separately reported touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro project should not be confused with this foldable device. Bloomberg described that other project here: Bloomberg. The earlier 2026 rumor framing is also documented by 9to5Mac.
MacBook, iPad or a new hybrid?
“Foldable MacBook” is convenient shorthand, not a confirmed Apple product category. Reports have variously described an all-screen MacBook, a foldable notebook, a large foldable iPad and a Mac/iPad hybrid.

The unresolved software and input choices are as important as the hardware:
- macOS could provide a familiar desktop workflow but is not designed around touch-first use.
- iPadOS would suit a tablet-like device but may not satisfy users who need full desktop applications.
- A hybrid could change behavior when a keyboard is attached, but that would require Apple to define new interface rules.
- The keyboard might be detachable, a conventional accessory, or partly virtual on the display.
Until Apple explains the operating system, keyboard and multitasking model, it is impossible to know whether the device would replace a MacBook, an iPad or neither.

Why the device could be expensive
Macworld’s account of the older analyst report cited an estimated roughly $900 combined component cost for the display and hinge. That was an attributed component estimate, not a predicted retail price and not the cost of the complete computer.
A final product would also absorb flexible-OLED manufacturing yields, custom structural parts, repeated-fold testing, warranty exposure, battery, processor, memory, storage, keyboard accessories and Apple’s margin. Low initial production volume would add further pressure. No credible final Apple price has been published.

What the M5 detail means in 2026
M5 was a meaningful future-chip clue when the rumor appeared. It is no longer evidence that a foldable product is imminent: Apple officially announced the M5 MacBook Air on March 3, 2026, with U.S. starting prices of $1,099 for 13 inches and $1,299 for 15 inches. The announcement is on Apple’s Newsroom.
If Apple waits several more years, a shipping foldable computer would more plausibly use a later-generation chip. An M5 label on a product arriving around 2029 would be commercially unusual unless the project had been radically delayed or redesigned.
Should you buy a Mac now or wait?
Buy now if you need certainty
- You need a dependable computer for work, school or travel.
- You value a conventional keyboard, trackpad, battery behavior and mature macOS support.
- You want an M5 Mac specifically; M5 MacBook models already exist.
- You do not want to pay a first-generation premium for uncertain hardware and software.
Wait only for the foldable concept
- You do not need a computer soon.
- A very large unfolded workspace matters more than predictable timing.
- You accept that the launch could be years away or never happen.
- You are comfortable with an unknown operating system, keyboard design, price and repair experience.
Current alternatives to consider
| Product | What it offers | Best for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| MacBook Air with M5 | 13- and 15-inch conventional clamshells; Apple claims up to 18 hours of battery life; U.S. prices start at $1,099 and $1,299 respectively. | Most buyers who want an Apple laptop now | No touchscreen or foldable display |
| MacBook Pro with M5 Pro or M5 Max | 14- and 16-inch models for demanding professional workloads | Video, 3D, software development and AI workloads | More expensive and heavier than the Air |
| Samsung Galaxy Book5 Pro 360 | 16-inch touchscreen Windows 2-in-1 with included S Pen; the listed U.S. 16GB/1TB configuration is $1,999.99. | Windows users who want pen input and a 360-degree hinge | It is not a true folding OLED panel or a macOS computer |
| Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Fold | 16.3-inch OLED foldable Windows PC | People who specifically want to try a book-style foldable computer | Check current availability, keyboard bundle, warranty and price; its platform and battery trade-offs may not suit mainstream buyers |
Samsung’s product positioning and S Pen details are also described in its announcement at Samsung Newsroom. Neither Windows alternative is an Apple replacement: the Galaxy uses a conventional 360-degree hinge, while the ThinkPad uses a separate-keyboard foldable design.
Bottom line on the 2026 headline
The foldable Apple-computer rumor is substantial enough to track, but “coming in 2026” is outdated and unconfirmed. The original M5 report dates to 2024, Apple now sells ordinary M5 Macs, and later reporting suggests the large foldable project may have moved toward 2029. The crease is expected to be minimized rather than eliminated, and the final product may be marketed as a MacBook, an iPad or an entirely new hybrid. Buy a current Mac if you need a computer; wait only if the foldable form factor itself is worth accepting an uncertain schedule and first-generation risks.
