What “released today” meant in the 2024 headline
The word “today” referred to Monday, September 9, 2024, the date of Apple’s iPhone 16 keynote. Apple announced the updated headphones and opened preorders on that date; they were not available in stores until September 20. Apple’s launch update gives the retail date.
So the headline captured a pre-event expectation, not a confirmed product launch announcement. The distinction matters: Apple announced an AirPods Max refresh that day, but not a second-generation model under the name AirPods Max 2.
What the pre-event report expected
A same-day BGR report citing Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said a new AirPods Max announcement was expected. It discussed possible USB-C, improved Active Noise Cancellation, and Adaptive Audio. Lossless audio and new colors also featured in the expectations around the update.

Those were reported possibilities, not features Apple had promised. The rumor had a plausible setting: AirPods Max had been on the market for several years, Apple was moving accessories from Lightning to USB-C, and the iPhone event included other AirPods announcements. But the report did not establish that Apple would unveil a full second-generation redesign.
What Apple actually announced on September 9
Apple’s official announcement called the headphones AirPods Max. It listed USB-C charging and five new colors: midnight, starlight, blue, purple, and orange. The U.S. price was $549, with preorders beginning September 9 and retail availability beginning September 20, 2024.

The same event brought AirPods 4 in two versions, including one with Active Noise Cancellation, and new hearing-health capabilities for AirPods Pro 2. The broader AirPods slate helps explain why an AirPods Max announcement seemed possible, but the Max update was much narrower than the AirPods 4 launch.
Which rumored features were not confirmed?
Apple’s September 2024 announcement did not describe a new H-series chip, redesigned acoustics, improved ANC, Adaptive Audio, or a complete second-generation platform for AirPods Max. It confirmed the port and color changes, not the larger feature package discussed before the keynote.

USB-C alone also should not be treated as proof that the 2024 headphones gained lossless audio. Apple presented USB-C as a charging change in that announcement. Its AirPods archive later records a separate March 24, 2025 milestone for lossless and ultra-low-latency audio on AirPods Max.
How the 2024 refresh differs from AirPods Max 2
A port-and-color refresh is not the same as a new generation. In 2024 Apple retained the AirPods Max name and announced a limited set of changes. Its AirPods newsroom archive records a distinct AirPods Max 2 announcement dated March 16, 2026.

That later announcement means AirPods Max 2 is a real product name, but it should not be retroactively applied to the 2024 headphones. The archive establishes the announcement date; the available details here do not establish the newer model’s specifications or current price.

Consider the 2024 AirPods Max refresh
The 2024 version makes most sense if USB-C is the main change you wanted, you prefer its color options, or you find it at a meaningful discount. Its $549 figure was the U.S. price Apple announced in 2024, not a verified current price for AirPods Max 2.

Consider AirPods Max 2
If you specifically want the model Apple later designated AirPods Max 2, compare that product’s current price and specifications on Apple’s current listing before buying. The archive confirms its announcement but does not provide enough detail here to make a reliable specification or value comparison.
Consider another AirPods form factor
For a portable in-ear fit and Apple’s hearing-health features, AirPods Pro 2 may be a better match than over-ear headphones. AirPods 4 with ANC suits listeners who prefer an open-ear design. Neither is a substitute for the over-ear fit of AirPods Max; fit and isolation preferences should guide the choice.
