Match both the A1708 identifier and the two-port description before paying.

The 8GB memory and SSD are onboard, so do not treat this machine as a normal user-upgrade platform. Confirm that the seller’s diagnostic report shows the advertised capacity rather than assuming an upgrade has been performed.

What the two Thunderbolt 3 ports can do
Both USB-C-shaped ports support charging, DisplayPort, Thunderbolt up to 40Gbps and USB 3.1 Gen 2 up to 10Gbps, according to Apple’s specifications. They are multifunction ports rather than ordinary charging-only sockets.
- One external display can run at up to 5120×2880 at 60Hz, or up to two displays at up to 4096×2304 at 60Hz, within Apple’s published configurations.
- VGA, HDMI and Thunderbolt 2 devices require separately sold, compatible adapters.
- For a monitor, dock or storage device, check whether it needs USB-C, Thunderbolt 3, DisplayPort, HDMI or VGA and choose an adapter that explicitly supports that standard.
- Test each port for charging, data transfer and display output; a port that charges is not necessarily fully functional for every mode.
Battery expectations: do not use the 2016 claim as a health guarantee
Apple reported up to 10 hours of wireless web use or iTunes movie playback in tests conducted in October 2016 on preproduction 2.0GHz Core i5 systems with 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD. Those are historical manufacturer test results, and Apple notes that runtime varies with use and configuration. They do not predict the runtime or health of an individual refurbished battery.

Request the unit’s current battery cycle count, maximum capacity or condition report, and a statement of whether it charges normally. Ask what happens if the battery fails during the warranty period. A seller who only says “tested battery” without providing a measurable result has not established the remaining capacity.
What “Grade B” means here
Condition grades are defined by each seller; there is no universal Apple Grade B standard. Phonebot’s page displayed a Grade B product but its visible condition text described Grade A instead: minor scratches or scuffs not visible at arm’s length, OEM-guideline testing and tested batteries. That Grade A wording must not be applied to Grade B.

Ask for the exact Grade B definition and photos of the actual unit. Clarify whether dents, deep scratches, screen marks, bright or dead pixels, keyboard shine, missing feet, engraving or replaced parts are allowed. Confirm that cosmetic grading is separate from functional testing.
What to verify before ordering
- Identity: obtain a screenshot of “About This Mac” or the serial/model information showing the 13-inch 2016 two-port machine (A1708), not the four-port variant.
- Configuration: verify the 2.0GHz Core i5, 8GB memory and 256GB SSD in system information or a diagnostic report.
- Battery: request cycle count, maximum capacity and charging behavior for the specific unit.
- Screen and case: request current photos and ask about pressure marks, dead pixels, discoloration, dents and keyboard wear.

- Software fit: verify the macOS version and application requirements with Apple and each software publisher. The available specifications do not establish this model’s current operating-system ceiling or compatibility with a particular app.
Availability and seller terms
The matching Phonebot Grade B page displayed “SOLD OUT” and “Out of Stock.” It displayed a six-month Phonebot warranty on that page, but stock and terms can change. Treat those details as a prompt to confirm the live offer, not as a promise that another listing has the same coverage.

Apple service and replacement parts
Apple’s service policy says products discontinued from distribution for more than seven years are obsolete; Apple discontinues hardware service for obsolete products and authorized providers cannot order parts for them. Mac laptops may be eligible for battery-only repair for up to 10 years after last distribution, subject to parts availability. The policy page published September 15, 2026 did not list this two-port 2016 model among its current worldwide vintage Mac laptops, and it was not identified in Apple’s obsolete laptop list. Absence from a list is not a service guarantee, so check the current status with Apple or an authorized provider before relying on repair availability.
A third-party catalog lists A1708 replacement categories and batteries, but grouped listings can cover multiple model years. The catalog entry is not an Apple-service endorsement; match the exact model and part number, and have battery work assessed by a qualified technician.

It can suit a buyer who needs a compact Retina MacBook for light everyday work and already accepts the limitations of a 2016 dual-core Intel system, two USB-C ports and non-upgradeable memory and storage. It is a poor choice when you require guaranteed current software support, substantial upgrade headroom, modern high-performance workloads or a clearly documented high-capacity battery. Those decisions depend on the specific seller’s condition evidence and your software requirements, not on the original specification sheet alone.
