What happened to Spotify Car Thing?
Spotify discontinued production of Car Thing in July 2022 while saying it would continue supporting units already sold. On May 23, 2024, the company notified customers that every Car Thing would stop operating after December 9, 2024. Spotify described the decision as a response to low product demand and supply-chain problems, but it did not publish a numerical sales or affected-owner figure.

Car Thing was a dedicated dashboard controller that connected to a smartphone running Spotify and played audio through a vehicle’s sound system. Once Spotify disabled its service, the hardware no longer provided its intended Spotify functionality.

Contemporaneous reporting on May 30, 2024 said Spotify had opened a refund process for owners who could provide proof of purchase. A receipt or emailed invoice was cited as an example. The reports did not establish that every claimant would receive a full refund, nor did they state a universal deadline, geographic scope, payment method or additional eligibility rules.

Spotify’s general refund page covers Premium, audiobook and podcast payments; it does not by itself establish a current hardware-refund policy for Car Thing.
What is known now
- The reported refund route was a 2024 response to the shutdown announcement.
- No current official terms found for 2026 confirm that Spotify still accepts requests submitted after the 2024 shutdown.
- Approval may depend on purchase records and any conditions Spotify applies to the individual case.

- Locate your original receipt, emailed invoice or other proof showing the Car Thing purchase.
- Record the device’s serial number and the email address associated with your Spotify account, if available.
- Ask support specifically whether a Car Thing hardware-refund program is currently open in your country.
- Request the exact eligibility requirements, submission deadline and expected payment method in writing.
- Keep the case number and all correspondence until Spotify gives a final decision.
Do not treat a support agent’s initial acknowledgement as a guarantee of approval. The 2024 reports left the full-refund question and other conditions unconfirmed.

A Bluetooth audio adapter or an AUX/USB cable can be practical accessories when the stereo has the matching input. Check the vehicle or stereo manufacturer’s compatibility information before buying. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay may require a compatible aftermarket head unit if the original system does not support them.
Should you buy a used Car Thing?
No—not as a working Spotify controller. Spotify’s intended Car Thing service was shut down after December 9, 2024. A used unit may have historical or collector interest, but a marketplace listing should not be interpreted as evidence that it can play or control Spotify today.

Use Spotify safely in the car
Spotify’s support guidance is: “Set up Spotify before you drive and avoid interacting with your device while the car is in motion.” Pair the phone, choose the playlist and configure controls while parked; then use only vehicle-integrated controls that can be operated safely and legally.
Bottom line for owners
The refund reversal was real as a May 2024 development: owners with proof of purchase were told they could contact Spotify about a refund. Because no current 2026 hardware-refund terms are confirmed, submit your documentation to Spotify Support but do not assume a late request will be accepted. For everyday listening, use the Bluetooth, AUX/USB, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Spotify Connect or built-in-system option your car actually supports.
