Its comparison used an M6 Mac mini and an M5 MacBook Pro, so it does not isolate the chips in otherwise identical computers.
What is different between M6 and M5?
M6 is Apple’s first 2-nanometer chip and debuted in Mac mini. Apple describes a new CPU complex, a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, and Neural Accelerators in every GPU core. The base M5 is the prior generation; the M5 Pro offered in the new Mac mini is a different, higher-tier chip and should not be treated as the base M5 in a generational comparison.

Apple announced M6 on August 25, 2026. Its M5 announcement was published October 15, 2025. The table’s performance claims are Apple’s figures; the test setup matters when interpreting them.

How much faster is M6 in Apple’s comparison?
Apple says M6 delivers up to 1.2× faster multithreaded CPU performance than M5, nearly 30% higher peak GPU compute for AI, and up to 2× peak Neural Engine compute versus the previous generation. It also gives M6 up to 170 GB/s of unified memory bandwidth, described as 10% higher than M5. “Up to” denotes a ceiling reported for selected tests, not a typical result or an across-the-board speed increase. The Neural Engine comparison is also a separate measure from the GPU’s AI compute claim.

Why the figures are not a chip-only verdict
Apple says its M6-versus-M5 tests were conducted in August 2026 using a preproduction Mac mini with M6, a 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU, and 32 GB memory, and an M5 14-inch MacBook Pro with a 10-core CPU, 10-core GPU, and 32 GB memory. Apple used selected industry-standard benchmarks and says results reflect the approximate performance of Mac mini. Because the comparison systems are different models, the result is a platform-level comparison: computer design and other system differences are part of the context. It is not a controlled test of two chips installed in otherwise identical systems.
The cited Apple material does not establish workload-by-workload scaling, nor does it provide a direct independent controlled M6-versus-M5 comparison. Treat the percentages as Apple’s selected-test claims rather than evidence that a particular task will finish that much sooner.

What do Apple’s other M6 Mac mini results show?
Apple also reported M6 Mac mini workload results against M1 and M4. These help describe Apple’s claims for the complete M6 Mac mini, but they are not M6-versus-M5 results.

Keep each multiplier attached to its named workload and comparator. These figures cannot answer how much faster M6 is than M5 in those same applications.

Should you buy an M5 Mac or choose M6?
Start with the exact computer and chip tier, then weigh your workload and configuration. A base M5 Mac and an M5 Pro Mac are not interchangeable comparison points. Likewise, comparing an M6 Mac mini with an M5 MacBook Pro compares complete systems, not just silicon.
- For CPU-heavy work: Apple’s up-to-1.2× multithreaded claim makes M6 the newer option, but it does not establish the speedup for your specific app or for single-threaded tasks.
- For local AI: Check whether your application uses the GPU’s Neural Accelerators, the Neural Engine, or another compute path. Apple’s peak figures do not prove app compatibility or a user-visible improvement.
- For graphics and games: Do not read the nearly 30% AI GPU-compute figure as a general graphics gain. Apple’s separate ray-tracing result is a Mac mini M6 comparison against M4, not M5.
- For memory-bound work: Consider both capacity and bandwidth. A system with more bandwidth is not necessarily the better fit if the workload needs more memory capacity.
- For a purchase decision: Compare current price, storage, ports, memory configuration, and the computer’s design alongside the chip. These determine value and suitability beyond benchmark percentages.
What does the M6 Mac mini configuration change?
Apple’s August 25, 2026 announcement lists the M6 Mac mini at a U.S. launch starting price of $899, with 16 GB unified memory standard and configuration options up to 32 GB. Apple said customer availability would begin September 22, 2026. The price is launch-announcement context, not a guarantee of the current price.

The same announcement lists an M5 Pro Mac mini starting at $1,699 U.S., with up to 64 GB unified memory and 307 GB/s memory bandwidth. That is a higher-tier alternative, not the base M5 used in Apple’s generational comparison.

System features can also matter: Apple lists Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, 2.5Gb Ethernet with a 10Gb option, and Thunderbolt 4 for the M6 Mac mini; the M5 Pro Mac mini has Thunderbolt 5. Choose based on the connections and memory your setup actually needs, not chip branding alone.
