Apple M5 Ultra is the faster Mac Studio option, but its headline gains are not guaranteed speedups in every app. Apple reports up to 1.3× higher multithreaded CPU performance, up to 4.5× peak GPU compute for AI, and up to 40% faster graphics than M3 Ultra. The clearest hardware step is memory bandwidth: 1.2TB/s, which Apple says is 50% more than M3 Ultra. Whether that justifies buying new—or replacing an M3 Ultra—depends on your workload, memory needs and the price of the configuration you would actually use.
What is different between M5 Ultra and M3 Ultra?
M5 Ultra is an announced, shipping Mac Studio option, not a rumored chip. Apple announced it on August 25, 2026; preorders opened that day and customer availability began September 22. Apple said the 512GB unified-memory version would arrive in late October. Its U.S. starting price at announcement was $5,499, before configuration choices; that is not a like-for-like price for every model or region. Apple’s announcement has the launch details.

Apple’s August 2026 comparison reports the following maximum gains over M3 Ultra:
#1 Best Overall
- SIZE DOWN. POWER UP — The far mightier, way tinier Mac mini desktop computer is five by five inches of pure power. Built for Apple Intelligence.* Redesigned around Apple silicon to unleash the full speed and capabilities of the spectacular M4 Pro chip. With ports at your convenience, on the front and back.
- LOOKS SMALL. LIVES LARGE — At just five by five inches, Mac mini is designed to fit perfectly next to a monitor and is easy to place just about anywhere.
- CONVENIENT CONNECTIONS — Get connected with Thunderbolt, HDMI, and Gigabit Ethernet ports on the back and, for the first time, front-facing USB-C ports and a headphone jack.
- SUPERCHARGED BY M4 PRO — The M4 Pro chip brings extra power to take on demanding projects like working with complex scenes or compiling millions of lines of code.
- BUILT FOR APPLE INTELLIGENCE — Apple Intelligence is the personal intelligence system that helps you write, express yourself, and get things done effortlessly. With groundbreaking privacy protections, it gives you peace of mind that no one else can access your data — not even Apple.*
- CPU: up to 1.3× multithreaded performance. Apple separately claims up to 1.25× single-threaded performance.
- AI compute: up to 4.5× peak GPU compute for AI.
- Graphics: up to 40% faster graphics.
- Memory bandwidth: 1.2TB/s, which Apple describes as 50% higher than M3 Ultra.
These are Apple’s vendor-published, workload-specific results—not independent tests or a promise that every application will run by the same factor. Apple says its August 2026 testing used preproduction Mac Studio systems and selected industry-standard benchmarks. The compared systems had M5 Ultra with a 36-core CPU, 80-core GPU and 256GB memory, and M3 Ultra with a 32-core CPU, 80-core GPU and 256GB memory. The matching 80-core GPU configurations make this a more useful comparison than one between different GPU tiers, but actual results still depend on the task and software.
Examples Apple cites
Apple also reports up to 4× faster LLM prompt processing in LM Studio, up to 4.3× faster text-to-image performance, and up to 1.7× faster Maxon Redshift scene rendering versus M3 Ultra. These are selected examples from Apple’s preproduction-system testing, not independent application benchmarks. Treat them as indicators of where Apple says the newer chip can excel, rather than estimates for every model, scene or workflow. See Apple’s comparison announcement for its claims.

What do the gains mean for real workloads?
CPU-heavy work
Compiling, CPU rendering and other heavily parallel tasks may benefit from the reported multithreaded improvement. Apps limited by one or a few threads may respond differently; Apple’s up-to single-thread claim is smaller than its multithreaded figure. The practical test is whether your current jobs spend enough time waiting on CPU work for that difference to matter.

GPU rendering, effects and graphics
The up-to-40% graphics claim may be relevant to GPU rendering and effects, but it does not establish the gain in a particular application or project. Software support, scene complexity and whether the task is GPU-bound all affect the result.

Local AI and large datasets
The AI headline is a peak GPU-compute comparison, not a universal multiplier for inference or training. Apple says each M5 Ultra GPU core includes a Neural Accelerator, but realized gains depend on software support and the workload. Capacity can be just as important as compute: a model or dataset that does not fit in available unified memory may be constrained regardless of peak speed. M5 Ultra’s listed ceiling of 512GB and higher bandwidth may therefore matter more than a benchmark ratio for some local-AI workflows.
Video and other professional applications
Apple’s named results do not establish a general video-editing speedup or performance across all professional apps. Check whether the operations that dominate your own work—such as effects, rendering or exports—are limited by the CPU, GPU, memory capacity or another part of the workflow.

Should you buy M5 Ultra or choose M3 Ultra?
Choose M5 Ultra when the newer limits address a real need
- Your work is demonstrably constrained by CPU or GPU processing time, and reducing that time has practical value.
- You need more unified-memory capacity or bandwidth for models, datasets or projects that exceed what your current system handles comfortably.
- You need the M5 Ultra Mac Studio’s listed connectivity or display support for a planned setup.
Consider M3 Ultra when the price difference outweighs the gains
An M3 Ultra Mac Studio may be sensible if its performance and memory capacity already meet your needs and the available configuration is meaningfully less expensive. The launch price of M5 Ultra does not establish M3 Ultra’s current price, stock or resale value. Compare live listings in your region with the same memory and SSD capacity; a lower starting price is not a valid comparison if it buys a materially different configuration.
For current M3 Ultra owners, measure before replacing
Use your own workloads to identify what is limiting you: record job duration, memory pressure and how often you hit capacity limits. Then compare those costs with the full price of the M5 Ultra configuration you need. Apple’s best-case percentages alone do not show whether an upgrade will pay off for your applications.

How to make a fair price and configuration comparison
- Match memory and storage. Compare systems with the unified-memory and SSD capacities your projects require; do not compare a base configuration with a higher-spec build.
- Check availability by region and date. M5 Ultra’s $5,499 figure is Apple’s U.S. starting price at its August 25, 2026 announcement, not a current quote for every configuration or country. Confirm the current listing and stock before deciding.
- Price the workload you need. Include the cost of the actual capacity and storage you need, then compare it with a suitable M3 Ultra configuration rather than relying on headline starting prices.
- Validate the bottleneck. If possible, test a representative project or model on the software and settings you use. A benchmark from another workload cannot substitute for that comparison.
Bottom line on M5 Ultra vs M3 Ultra
M5 Ultra brings higher Apple-reported performance ceilings, 50% more memory bandwidth, and support for up to 512GB of unified memory. It is the stronger fit when those changes remove a concrete performance or capacity limit. M3 Ultra remains a potential value choice if it already meets your needs and can be found at a favorable price in a comparable configuration. Apple’s figures are useful guidance, not a guarantee of the same gains in your applications.
