Short answer: Apple’s M5 is a base-tier chip, while M4 Pro is a higher-tier option with more CPU and GPU cores and substantially higher published memory bandwidth. Apple’s headline M5 speed claims compare it with base M4—not M4 Pro—so they do not prove that M5 is faster overall. The right choice depends on the exact Mac configuration, memory capacity and your workload.
M5 vs M4 Pro: the key differences
M5 appears in Apple’s current 14-inch MacBook Pro configuration. M4 Pro targets more demanding professional systems and is available in MacBook Pro configurations with larger CPU and GPU designs. Apple’s current technical specifications list M5 with a 10-core CPU and 10-core GPU, while M4 Pro MacBook Pro configurations reach 14 CPU cores and 20 GPU cores.

| Published specification | Apple M5 | Apple M4 Pro | What it means |
|---|---|---|---|
| CPU | 10 cores: 4 super cores and 6 efficiency cores | Up to 14 cores: 10 performance and 4 efficiency cores | M4 Pro has more CPU cores in the listed configuration. Core count alone does not establish faster results because architecture and workload also matter. |
| GPU | 10 cores, with Neural Accelerators and hardware-accelerated ray tracing | Up to 20 cores, with hardware-accelerated ray tracing | M4 Pro provides the larger GPU configuration for heavily parallel graphics workloads. |
| Neural Engine | 16 cores | 16 cores | The listed core counts are equal; that does not by itself establish equal AI throughput. |
| Unified-memory bandwidth | 153GB/s on Apple’s current MacBook Pro technical-specifications page; Apple’s comparison page reports 120GB/s | 273GB/s on Apple’s technical-specifications page | Apple’s pages disagree about M5 bandwidth. Quote the source and figure instead of treating the numbers as one settled specification. |
| Unified-memory capacity | Options depend on the specific M5 Mac configuration; Apple’s cited pages do not provide one universal maximum for every system | Up to 64GB in Apple’s M4 Pro announcement | Check the memory option on the exact Mac you intend to buy. |
| Thunderbolt | Check the exact M5 Mac model and configuration | Apple says M4 Pro supports Thunderbolt 5 on Mac, with up to 120Gb/s data transfer | Port selection and display support are host-computer features, not conclusions that can be drawn from a chip name alone. |
Sources for these specifications are Apple’s MacBook Pro technical specifications, Apple’s MacBook Pro comparison page, and Apple’s announcements for M5 and M4 Pro.

Is M5 faster than M4 Pro?
There is no substantiated across-the-board answer from Apple’s published claims. Apple’s October 2025 M5 announcement reports up to 20% faster multithreaded CPU performance, up to 1.6× faster graphics performance in pro apps and up to 3.5× faster AI performance—but each comparison uses the base M4 as the baseline, not M4 Pro. Those figures therefore cannot be relabeled as M5-versus-M4-Pro results.

A matched independent benchmark set comparing M5 and M4 Pro was not established in the available evidence. Performance can change with the number of cores, memory size, cooling, software version and the exact Mac chassis. Treat Apple’s figures as vendor claims for the products and tests Apple specified, not as a universal ranking.
What the extra M4 Pro resources change
CPU-heavy work
The M4 Pro configuration with up to 14 CPU cores gives it more parallel processing capacity than the listed 10-core M5. That is relevant to sustained compiling, large exports, code builds, simulation and other workloads that use many threads. It is not a guarantee that every short or lightly threaded task will be faster.

GPU-heavy work
With up to 20 GPU cores versus M5’s 10, M4 Pro is the more substantial design for workloads that can occupy many graphics cores, such as complex 3D scenes, effects, high-resolution timelines and GPU-accelerated compute. Actual gains depend on whether the application scales across those cores.

Apple lists 273GB/s memory bandwidth for M4 Pro and 153GB/s for M5 on its current technical-specifications page. Higher bandwidth can help when a workload repeatedly moves large data sets between unified memory and the CPU or GPU. Apple’s comparison page lists M5 at 120GB/s, so verify the specification shown for the exact product page and date before making a purchase decision.

Both chips are listed with a 16-core Neural Engine. Neural Engine count is only one part of AI performance; model size, memory capacity, software support and other accelerators also affect real workloads.
Mac features you must compare separately
A chip comparison does not fully describe a laptop. Apple documents Thunderbolt 5 support on M4 Pro Macs with up to 120Gb/s transfer, but you should confirm the ports, display limits, storage, battery configuration and other I/O on the particular MacBook Pro model. Do not assume that every M5 or M4 Pro system has identical connectivity simply because the processor family is named.

How to choose between an M5 Mac and an M4 Pro Mac
- Identify the exact computer. Record the screen size, chassis, chip bin, memory, storage and operating-system version for both options.
- Match the core configuration to your software. Check whether your applications are CPU-bound, GPU-bound, memory-capacity-bound or mostly single-threaded.
- Choose sufficient unified memory first. Large video projects, virtual machines, software builds, 3D assets and local AI models can benefit more from adequate capacity than from a headline chip comparison.
- Verify ports and displays. Compare the actual Mac’s Thunderbolt generation, external-display support and peripheral requirements.
- Use comparable benchmarks. Prefer tests that run the same task on similarly configured machines, and keep Apple’s M5-versus-base-M4 claims labeled separately from independent results.
- Check current price and availability. These vary by region, seller and date and are not determined by the chip specifications alone.
Who should choose each chip?
M5 is the sensible fit when
- You want a current 14-inch MacBook Pro for general productivity, development or creative work without routinely saturating many CPU and GPU cores.
- Your applications benefit from M5-specific features such as its listed Neural Accelerators and ray-tracing hardware, but your projects do not require the largest memory configuration.
- You value a newer base-tier system and can confirm that its memory, ports and display support meet your needs.
M4 Pro is the safer fit when
- Your work regularly scales across many CPU or GPU cores, including demanding exports, 3D, effects, compiling or compute tasks.
- You work with large datasets or local AI models where the higher published bandwidth and up-to-64GB memory option are useful.
- You specifically need the capabilities Apple associates with M4 Pro Macs, including Thunderbolt 5 support, subject to the exact host configuration.
Bottom line
M5 is not a straightforward replacement for M4 Pro. It is a newer base-tier chip with Apple-reported gains over base M4, whereas M4 Pro offers a larger CPU/GPU configuration and higher published memory bandwidth. For a final buying decision, compare complete Mac configurations and a workload-specific benchmark rather than relying on the M5 name or Apple’s base-M4 performance claims.
Frequently Asked Questions
