Visual Intelligence on iPhone 16
On the iPhone 16 lineup, Visual Intelligence uses Camera Control to help identify objects and places, summarize or copy text, translate text, and recognize phone numbers or email addresses. Apple also described optional handoffs to Google search or ChatGPT.
Optional ChatGPT access
iOS 18.2 added ChatGPT access in Siri and Writing Tools. Apple said users could use it without creating a ChatGPT account by default and described its handling of unauthenticated requests. Those privacy and data-handling points are Apple’s own launch claims, not an independent audit.

Does every iPhone running iOS 18.2 get Apple Intelligence?
No. Installing iOS 18.2 and receiving Apple Intelligence are separate questions. Apple’s listed Apple Intelligence hardware at launch was:
| Device family | Models or chips listed by Apple | Apple Intelligence access |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone | iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro, 16 Pro Max, 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max | Eligible hardware |
| iPad | iPad with A17 Pro or M1 and later | Eligible hardware |
| Mac | Mac with M1 and later | Eligible hardware |
Other iPhone models may install iOS 18.2 but do not gain the Apple Intelligence features listed above. Visual Intelligence was specifically described for the iPhone 16 lineup, so an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone 15 Pro does not automatically receive that camera feature.

Which iPhones get Genmoji?
At launch, Genmoji was part of Apple Intelligence. On iPhone, that means the iPhone 16 family and iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max—the iPhone models Apple listed as Apple Intelligence-capable. A phone that supports iOS 18.2 but is outside that list does not get Genmoji.
Was Apple Intelligence available everywhere?
Not initially. Apple’s December 2024 announcement described launch-era localized English availability for Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, the United Kingdom and the United States, with the device and Siri language set accordingly.

Apple also said iPhone and iPad access in the European Union would begin rolling out in April. That was a statement about the 2024 rollout plan, not a dependable guide to current country or language support. For present-day availability, check Apple’s latest regional and language requirements rather than relying on the original announcement.
What iOS 18.2 means for existing users
- The update itself was free; Apple’s announcement gave no reason to buy an accessory or replace a device solely for the release.
- Apple Intelligence requires the listed hardware, and feature access can also depend on language and region settings.
- Visual Intelligence has the narrower requirement of an iPhone 16 model.
- ChatGPT integration is optional; users can choose whether to invoke it from Siri or Writing Tools.
The complete technical release notes are separate from Apple’s consumer announcement. The announcement establishes the release date, headline features, supported hardware and launch-era availability, but it is not an independent test of performance, quality or privacy.
The Bottom Line
iOS 18.2 arrived on December 11, 2024 as a free update. Its headline Apple Intelligence features are limited by hardware, language and region: iPhone 16 models and iPhone 15 Pro models qualify on iPhone, while Visual Intelligence is an iPhone 16 feature.
