Apple Intelligence on Mac is not purely on-device: many tasks run on the Mac, while requests that need more computing power may go to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute (PCC). For clipboard use, the key distinction is that Writing Tools act on text you select; Apple does not document them as automatically monitoring everything you copy. You can also build a Shortcut that uses Apple Intelligence actions, but that is a configured workflow, not a default clipboard feature.
Does Apple Intelligence use the cloud on Mac?
Yes, sometimes. Apple describes Apple Intelligence as a hybrid system: many models run on-device, and requests that need greater computational capacity can be routed to PCC, Apple’s server-based system. Whether a particular action goes to PCC depends on the request; Apple does not describe every Writing Tools action as cloud-based or provide a universal rule for predicting the route.

For developers using Apple’s Foundation Models framework, Apple lists a 4K context size for on-device use and 32K for PCC. Apple also lists on-device use as available offline and unlimited, while PCC requires a network connection and is subject to a daily limit. These are framework-specific published specifications, not a general benchmark or a comparison with every third-party cloud AI service. Apple Developer: adding server-side intelligence with PCC.

There is no documented default feature that automatically sends each copied item to Apple Intelligence. Apple documents Writing Tools for text you select in supported writing contexts. To apply them to text, select it and invoke Writing Tools in the app where you are working.

Apple documents a separate way to create workflows: Shortcuts can use Apple Intelligence actions to summarize text, create images, or generate responses that feed into a shortcut. You can experiment with a text-handling Shortcut, but Apple’s documentation does not establish one universal clipboard-triggered recipe. Any clipboard workflow must be configured, and server-side Shortcut features may have daily usage limits. Apple Support: Apple Intelligence on Mac and Apple’s privacy explanation.
Universal Clipboard is different: it lets you copy on one Apple device and paste on another. It is not an AI feature or a clipboard-history tool. Apple Support: Universal Clipboard.

How to use Writing Tools on a Mac
- Select the text you want to work on in a supported writing context.
- Control-click the selection and choose Show Writing Tools. Some apps instead provide a Writing Tools button.
- Choose an action, such as proofreading, rewriting, changing tone, summarizing, extracting key points, or organizing text into a list or table. Available actions and their presentation can vary by app.
- Review the result before using it. For read-only text, such as text in a PDF, Apple says the rewritten version appears in the dialog and can be copied.
Apple says Writing Tools are available in most places people write, including third-party apps and websites, but that does not guarantee identical controls or every action in every app. Apple Support: Writing Tools on Mac.

What does Apple say happens to data sent to PCC?
Apple says PCC receives only the data relevant to fulfilling a request, uses it for that request, then removes it; Apple also says the data is not stored or accessible to Apple. Apple describes independent inspection of PCC server code as a way to verify its privacy design. These are Apple’s stated architecture and privacy claims, not independent findings presented here. Apple’s privacy documentation also says it may collect limited request metadata, including approximate request and response size, the feature used, and processing time. Apple says this metadata does not include the request content or returned result and is not linked to an Apple Account. That qualification matters: Apple’s claim that PCC does not retain the request is not the same as a claim that no service metadata is collected.
How to check whether your Mac sent a PCC request
- Open System Settings → Privacy & Security → Apple Intelligence Report.
- Choose a reporting window: Apple documents options for the last 15 minutes or seven days.
- Export the activity report and review it for PCC requests.
An empty report can simply mean there was no PCC request during the selected window; it does not by itself show that Apple Intelligence was unused. Apple Support: privacy on Mac.

Which Macs and users are eligible?
Apple’s June 8, 2026 announcement lists Macs with M1 or later among supported devices. Access also depends on the macOS release, supported language and region, and the specific feature. Apple has said some server-based features have usage limits; its September 2026 announcement says expanded access may become available for a fee in the future, but the cited material establishes no stable price or universal quota. Check Apple’s current availability details for your country and the feature you want to use before relying on it.
