You do not generally need both a Mac and an iPhone to use Apple Intelligence: Apple lists eligible devices separately for macOS 27 and iOS 27. Some Apple Intelligence features do require an iPhone nearby, however. iPhone Mirroring is different: it is specifically for controlling a nearby iPhone from a Mac. Meanwhile, some iPhone and iPad apps can run on Apple silicon Macs, but app compatibility is not the same as every iPhone feature transferring to the Mac.
Do you need both a Mac and an iPhone for Apple Intelligence?
No, not as a general requirement. Apple describes eligibility separately for each platform: Apple Intelligence is available on supported iPhones running iOS 27 and supported Macs running macOS 27. Apple says some features require an iPhone nearby, but that does not mean every Apple Intelligence feature requires both devices.

For Apple Intelligence, Apple’s September 14, 2026 announcement names iPhone 18 Pro, and the published eligible-device groups include iPhone 16 models or later. So iPhone 18 Pro falls within Apple’s stated generation range. That does not establish that every feature is available in every language or region, nor does it mean an iPhone 18 Pro is needed if you already have another eligible device.

Check the device list for the platform you plan to use
Apple’s eligibility information identifies supported iPhones and Macs separately. For a Mac, the stated chip requirement is Apple silicon M1 or later. For iPhone, Apple’s materials include iPhone 16 models or later and also specifically list iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Do not treat every iPhone 15 model as eligible based on those statements.

Eligibility means the device meets Apple’s stated hardware requirements; it is not a promise that every Apple Intelligence feature works on that device in every location or language. Apple says availability varies by platform, language and region, and individual features can have additional conditions.
Language and region can change what is available
Apple lists supported languages including English, Danish, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, Swedish, Turkish, Vietnamese, simplified and traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Apple cautions that some features may not be available in every language or region. Its support guidance also describes restrictions involving China mainland, with conditions tied to purchase location and account region; check Apple’s current terms rather than applying a broad rule to every user in China.

Some features have variable daily limits
Apple says some Apple Intelligence features that use server-side models have daily usage limits. The limit may vary with the feature, request complexity, system demand, system policies and other factors. Apple has not stated a single numeric daily quota in the announcement, so there is no reliable universal number to use.

iPhone Mirroring lets you control a nearby iPhone from a Mac, receive iPhone notifications on the Mac and follow Live Activities. Apple’s current instructions specify macOS 15 or later on the Mac and iOS 18 or later on the iPhone. It is not a capability introduced only with macOS 27.

- Sign in to the same Apple Account on both devices.
- Make sure Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled on both.
- Keep the iPhone nearby and locked while using Mirroring.
Apple says iPhone Mirroring is unavailable in the European Union. It is also not a full transfer of iPhone functions: the camera and microphone are not compatible with Mirroring, and some Continuity features, including Continuity Camera and AirPlay, are unavailable on the Mac while Mirroring is active.
Can iPhone apps run on a Mac without iPhone Mirroring?
Yes, some unmodified iPhone and iPad apps can run on Apple silicon Macs. This is separate from iPhone Mirroring: an app that runs on the Mac is not necessarily using or controlling an iPhone nearby, and app compatibility does not make the Mac equivalent to an iPhone.

Apple’s developer guidance describes several reasons an app may not be suitable for Mac:
- It depends on iPhone hardware that the Mac does not have, such as accelerometers, gyroscopes, magnetometers, depth-sensing cameras or GPS.
- It uses a framework or feature that is unavailable in macOS.
- Its interaction model depends heavily on touch and does not translate well to Mac controls.
Those factors explain why compatibility is not universal; they do not establish whether any particular app is offered for Mac. Check the individual app’s availability and requirements.

Which features work on only one device?
The Apple materials covered here establish requirements for Apple Intelligence, iPhone Mirroring and iOS app compatibility, but they do not provide a complete inventory of every macOS 27-only and iOS 27-only feature. It would therefore be misleading to present a definitive list of everything that works on just one platform.
For the specific capabilities covered here, the practical distinction is:
- Apple Intelligence: available on eligible devices on both platforms, with some features requiring an iPhone nearby.
- iPhone Mirroring: uses both devices, with the Mac as the control surface and a nearby iPhone as the device being controlled.
- iPhone and iPad apps on Mac: some can run on Apple silicon Macs without turning every iPhone capability into a Mac feature.
For any other feature announced for macOS 27 or iOS 27, verify its specific device, software, language and regional requirements in Apple’s current release information. General platform eligibility alone does not answer whether a particular feature is available.
