Dasycladus vermicularis, a giant single-celled marine green alga, can seal damage to its cell using a proposed chemical sequence that activates coumarin compounds. Researchers found evidence that the activated chemistry helps cross-link nearby biological molecules into a wound plug. The finding may inspire ideas for underwater adhesives, but it is not a ready-made glue or a human wound treatment.
Why a wound is an urgent problem for this alga
Dasycladus vermicularis is a siphonous green macroalga: despite its size, it is a single cell. Damage to that cell risks losing its contents, so a rapid seal can be critical. A secondary report described the alga as potentially more than 2 cm long and said sealing begins within seconds and finishes within minutes; those timings are the report’s description, not a quantified study-wide estimate or timing protocol in the indexed abstract. What changes when the alga is wounded?
The study compared coumarin chemistry in intact and wounded tissue. In intact algae, the researchers identified 6,7-dihydroxycoumarin-3-sulfate. After wounding, they reported 3,6,7-trihydroxycoumarin, the corresponding compound after removal of its sulfate group.

The later open-access study discusses this sulfated-coumarin chemistry and reports that measured coumarin contents varied among samples and collection conditions. How the proposed wound-sealing chemistry works
- Damage brings the components together. The proposed model is that wounding allows the stored precursor to contact sulfatase activity.
- Desulfation activates the coumarin. Removal of the sulfate yields 3,6,7-trihydroxycoumarin.
- Oxidation creates reactive chemistry. The activated coumarin is proposed to oxidize, producing reactive species capable of bonding with nearby biological molecules.
- Cross-linking helps form a plug. The study reported evidence that coumarin-derived chemistry cross-links proteins or carbohydrate molecules into a polymeric material that contributes to sealing the breach.
The researchers used ultraviolet and fluorescence studies, along with mass spectrometry, as evidence for a coumarin-based polymer in the wound plug. What the finding does—and does not—suggest about underwater glue
A material that forms or hardens in water is scientifically interesting as a possible source of ideas for underwater adhesives. In this case, however, the study examined how the alga seals its own damage. It did not demonstrate a manufactured adhesive, a scalable production method, safety for people, durability, or performance against commercial products. The result is a biological mechanism that could inspire future materials research, not an adhesive a person can buy or use.
