Apple Intelligence has produced demonstrably false news notification summaries, including one that wrongly said Luigi Mangione had shot himself. Apple temporarily suspended News & Entertainment summaries in beta software in January 2025, but the available Apple guidance does not establish whether that category-specific feature is currently available in every release and region. Apple warns that its generative outputs can vary and says users should check important information.
What went wrong with Apple’s news summaries?
Apple Intelligence can condense long or stacked notifications, so a reader may see an AI-generated summary instead of the full alert. In a widely reported December 2024 incident, a summary attributed to BBC News falsely said Luigi Mangione had shot himself. The BBC complained to Apple after the alert misrepresented the story. 9to5Mac reported the incident on December 13, 2024.

Other contemporary reports described incorrect summaries involving a premature darts result for Luke Littler and a false summary about Rafael Nadal. These are examples of reported errors, not evidence of how often the feature fails. The sources available do not establish a measured error rate or substantiate the title’s “millions of users” as a count of people who received faulty summaries.

On January 6, 2025, Apple said it would further clarify when a notification summary had been generated by Apple Intelligence. TechCrunch also reported Apple’s advice that users report unexpected summaries. TechCrunch covered the response.

On January 17, Apple said that News & Entertainment notification summaries would be temporarily unavailable in beta versions of iOS 18.3, iPadOS 18.3, and macOS Sequoia 15.3. The Associated Press reported that statement. It applied to those beta releases; it should not be read as proof that the feature is permanently removed, or that its status is identical across later releases and regions. The Associated Press reported Apple’s announcement.

Apple also describes notification prioritization and Reduce Interruptions Focus as related ways to manage interruptions. The exact options and availability can depend on software version, device, language, and region. Apple’s guide documents the general notification-summary controls, not the current availability of the News & Entertainment category in every configuration. Why users should check the original alert
Apple’s support guidance states: “Apple Intelligence uses generative models and outputs may vary. Check important information for accuracy.” A summary is a convenience, not a substitute for the underlying notification or a publisher’s reporting—especially when the claim concerns a death, a breaking-news development, or another consequential event. The documented incidents show that a short summary can reverse or distort the meaning of a story; they do not, by themselves, show how frequently that happens.
