Apple Devices is Apple’s Windows app for managing an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a PC. It lets you back up, update, or restore a connected device, sync selected media, and transfer files to apps that support file sharing. It is a device-management utility—not a general file manager or a media player.

What can you do with Apple Devices?

After connecting an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, select it in Apple Devices to open its management controls. Apple documents these main uses:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Back up and restore: Save a device backup to the Windows PC or iCloud, or restore from a backup.
  • Update: Check for and install device software updates.
  • Sync selected content: Choose music, movies, TV shows, or photos to transfer to the device. You can sync an entire supported category or select specific items.
  • Transfer app files: Drag files from Windows into an app listed in the device’s Files view, provided that app supports file sharing.

Apple’s guide defines syncing as “transferring items and keeping them up to date” between a Windows device and an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. See Apple’s introduction to syncing and its Apple Devices User Guide.

How is it different from iCloud?

Apple Devices sync is a manual way to choose specific content to put on a device. iCloud keeps supported content updated across devices as it changes. Choose manual syncing when you want control over what is stored locally; use iCloud when you want cloud-based updates across devices.

SSK Portable SSD 1TB External Solid State Hard Drive USB C Up to 1050MB/s
  • Capacity Display Variance: 1TB external ssd often appears as around 931GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 1 TB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
  • 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
  • Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
  • USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
  • Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity

The two approaches can affect which controls appear. If iCloud Photos or Apple Music is managing a library, Apple says the corresponding manual-sync options may not be available. Apple Music for Windows is needed to sync music, and Apple TV for Windows is needed to sync movies and TV shows. Apple recommends installing those apps before using Apple Devices with those services. Details are in Apple’s media-syncing guide.

What do you need to get started?

  1. Install Apple Devices from the Microsoft Store, following Apple’s user guide.
  2. If you plan to sync music, movies, or TV shows, install Apple Music for Windows or Apple TV for Windows, as applicable.
  3. Connect the iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch to the PC using a compatible USB or USB-C data cable. Match the cable to the ports on both devices; no single connector type is right for every device and PC.
  4. Follow any prompts on the Apple device, such as entering its passcode or choosing to trust the PC.
  5. Select the device in Apple Devices to access its General settings, content-sync controls, backup options, and other management features.

Can you sync over Wi-Fi?

Yes, after an initial wired setup. Connect the device to the PC by cable, select it in Apple Devices, open General, and turn on “Show this [device] when on Wi-Fi.” After setup, the Windows PC and Apple device must be on the same Wi-Fi network. Apple’s guide lists iOS 5 or later for this feature; that is the compatibility statement for Wi-Fi syncing, not a complete current compatibility list. See Apple’s Wi-Fi syncing instructions.

How do Windows backups work?

Connect the device to the PC, select it in Apple Devices, and choose Back Up Now. Apple also provides an encryption option for local backups. An encrypted backup is required to save Health and Activity data from the iPhone, iPad, or Apple Watch. Keep the encryption password safe: Apple says an encrypted backup cannot be recovered without it. Follow Apple’s Windows backup instructions.

What Apple Devices does not mean

  • It does not provide unrestricted access to every file on the device. File transfers through the Files view depend on apps that support file sharing.
  • It is not itself a music or video player; syncing those media types requires Apple Music for Windows or Apple TV for Windows.
  • It does not replace iCloud. Manual syncing and cloud-based updates are different ways to keep content available.

Apple’s documented setup and workflows explain the app’s purpose, but the cited guides do not establish a complete current Windows system-requirements list, current app version, Store availability by region, or full supported-device matrix. Check Apple’s current compatibility information and the Microsoft Store listing for those details.
