Android—particularly Google Pixel—offers more built-in control over Home Screen layout and icon styling. iPhone still provides substantial personalization, including icon and widget appearance, Lock Screen widgets, clock sizing, and alternate controls. The difference is strongest when you want to change how the Home Screen is arranged or how icons look; it is not an objective ranking of every phone, because Android features vary by manufacturer, model, and software version.
How the comparison works
This comparison covers built-in controls for Home Screen layout, icons, wallpaper and color, widgets, and the Lock Screen. Apple’s current instructions describe iOS 26. Android instructions cover a varied ecosystem, so Pixel examples are identified separately. Official feature pages do not provide a shared measurement that can prove one platform has more customization overall.
Where can you change the Home Screen layout?
iPhone
You can rearrange apps and widgets and change how Home Screen icons and widgets appear. Apple’s documented options emphasize arrangement and appearance; they do not establish arbitrary grid sizing as a built-in iPhone control. Apple’s iOS 26 guidance describes changing icon and widget size and appearance.
Android, including Pixel
Android lets you arrange apps, shortcuts, folders, and widgets across Home Screen pages. Google warns that instructions can vary by device, so menus and available controls depend on the phone maker and software version. Google’s Android Home Screen help covers the general approach.

Pixel phones provide a more specific example: Pixel guidance includes Home Screen grid or layout settings. That makes Pixel a stronger documented choice if adjusting the grid is a priority, but it should not be taken as a feature available in the same form on every Android phone. Google’s Pixel customization instructions describe these controls.
Can you customize app icons on iPhone and Android?
iPhone
On iOS 26, Home Screen icons and widgets can be displayed small or large and use light, dark, clear, or tinted appearances. These are built-in appearance treatments; Apple’s guidance does not say that users can freely replace every app icon with an arbitrary icon-pack design. See Apple’s instructions for changing the Home Screen appearance.

Pixel and other Android phones
Pixel guidance documents icon styles and shapes, along with color choices and theme packs. Availability can depend on software, device, account, or region requirements. Other Android phones may offer different controls—or fewer of them—so check the maker’s documentation for your model rather than assuming Pixel settings apply across Android. Google’s Pixel page lists its supported options and requirements.
How do wallpaper and system colors compare?
iPhone
iPhone supports Home Screen and Lock Screen wallpaper choices, while icon and widget appearances can be adjusted using the available light, dark, clear, and tinted treatments. The controls give you ways to coordinate the screen without establishing the same wallpaper-derived color system documented for Pixel.

Pixel and Android
Android customization varies across manufacturers. Pixel guidance describes wallpaper-linked color palettes as well as custom colors and themes. Pixel wallpaper tools also include AI-generated and emoji wallpapers, but AI wallpaper is limited to Pixel 8 and later and may be unavailable for some account types. Those are Pixel-specific examples, not universal Android features. Google’s Pixel wallpaper help explains the wallpaper options and eligibility limits.
Where can widgets go, and what can they do?
Both platforms support widgets, but the official guidance cited here does not establish a like-for-like comparison of their total widget catalogs.

- iPhone: Widgets can appear on the Home Screen and Lock Screen, as well as in Today View and StandBy contexts. Available sizes and interactions depend on the widget and app; some widgets support direct actions. Apple’s widget guide covers placement and use.
- Android: Users can add and organize Home Screen widgets. Resizing is possible when a widget offers resize handles; not every widget supports it. Google’s general instructions note that some steps apply only to Android 14 and later. Google’s Android help explains the available steps.
Apple’s Human Interface Guidelines describe a widget as a way to provide “quick access to essential information and focused interactions from your app or game.” The exact information and actions available are determined by the app’s widget.

iPhone
Apple documents Lock Screen personalization with wallpaper or a photo, widgets, clock sizing, and alternate controls such as Timer or Voice Memo. Users can also add Home Screen widgets and controls to Control Center. Apple cautions that not all features are available on every iPhone model. Apple’s personalization guide describes these options.

Android
Google documents At a Glance information on the Home Screen or Lock Screen in supported contexts. The Android and Pixel pages cited here do not establish an equivalent, broadly available level of user control over the Lock Screen across all Android phones. This is a limit of what those documented comparisons support, not proof that no Android manufacturer offers additional controls.
Which should you choose?
- Choose Android, especially Pixel, if you care most about documented grid or layout controls, icon shapes and styles, or wallpaper-linked themes. Check the settings for the particular phone: Android features are not uniform.
- Choose iPhone if you want built-in options for icon and widget appearance alongside a personalized Lock Screen with widgets, clock sizing, and alternate controls.
On the evidence in the platform guidance, Android—most clearly Pixel—has the stronger case for Home Screen layout and icon-level tinkering. iPhone offers a coherent set of visual and Lock Screen controls. Which feels more customizable depends on which of those changes matters to you.
