How to Read Motor Oil Viscosity Grades Like 5W-30 and 10W-40

In a motor-oil grade such as 5W-30, W means winter: the number before it identifies the oil’s low-temperature SAE grade, while the number after it identifies its high-temperature grade, based on viscosity behavior at 100°C (212°F). The grade describes viscosity—not overall oil quality or whether the oil is right for your vehicle. Check your owner’s manual for the required viscosity and oil specifications.

What does 5W-30 mean?

5W-30 is a multigrade SAE viscosity classification with two parts:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • 5W: the low-temperature grade. The W stands for winter, and this part of the label is relevant to cold starting and cold running.
  • 30: the high-temperature grade, describing the oil’s viscosity behavior at 100°C (212°F).

The numbers are grade designations, not literal temperatures. In particular, “5W” does not mean the oil is intended for a specific outside temperature, and “30” does not describe its viscosity at every hot-engine temperature.

What does 10W-40 mean?

10W-40 is another multigrade classification. Its 10W is the low-temperature grade, and its 40 is the high-temperature grade at the same 100°C reference point.

Valvoline MaxLife High Mileage 5W-30 Synthetic Blend Motor Oil 5 Quart
  • Formulated for engines with 75,000 miles or more, Valvoline MaxLife High Mileage synthetic blend is formulated with seal conditioners to help prevent oil leaks and reduce oil consumption
  • Delivers 20% better wear protection and 15% better sludge defense than industry standards to help prevent engine breakdown
  • Extra detergents safeguard against friction, corrosion and deposits to keep high-mileage engines clean
  • Advanced friction-fighting additives help maximize performance and improve fuel efficiency
  • Provides performance benefits for high mileage, new and re-built engines alike

Compared by grade position alone, 5W is a lower low-temperature grade number than 10W, while SAE 30 is a lower high-temperature grade than SAE 40. Those comparisons do not establish which oil a particular engine needs or make one oil a universal replacement for the other.

5W-30 vs. 10W-40: what the labels tell you

Label Low-temperature grade High-temperature grade What the label alone establishes
5W-30 SAE 5W SAE 30 A multigrade classification; not whether it suits a specific vehicle
10W-40 SAE 10W SAE 40 A different multigrade classification; not whether it suits a specific vehicle

The label does not say that 10W-40 is only for older or high-mileage engines, or that 5W-30 is right for every car. Nor is ambient climate alone enough to choose between them. Vehicle instructions determine the applicable grade and any special conditions.

How to choose oil for your vehicle

  1. Find the oil requirements in the owner’s manual. Identify the specified SAE viscosity grade and the required performance category or manufacturer specification. Ford’s consumer guidance says to use oil and fluids that meet the defined specification and viscosity grades, and directs owners to the manual.
  2. Check the performance category on the container. Look for the API service category and, where applicable, the ILSAC category required by the vehicle. API advises owners to consult the manual when using its category charts.
  3. Confirm any manufacturer specification or approval. A matching viscosity grade by itself does not establish that an oil meets a vehicle maker’s requirements.
  4. Use the manual’s specific guidance for unusual conditions. If it gives a separate instruction for extreme cold or another operating condition, follow that vehicle-specific direction rather than choosing by label or climate alone.

For example, the 2011 GMC Sierra owner’s manual identifies SAE 5W-30 as the best viscosity grade for that vehicle, disallows some other grades, and gives separate extreme-cold guidance. That is an instruction for the vehicles covered by that manual, not a recommendation for other models.

Viscosity grade is not an oil-quality rating

The SAE grade describes viscosity classification, not the oil’s complete performance or quality. API’s engine-oil licensing system uses API 1509, which references SAE J300 for viscosity classification as well as performance requirements. API’s category guidance also distinguishes between gasoline and diesel oils: for gasoline engines, the latest category includes the performance of earlier categories, but diesel categories do not always work the same way. API FA-4, for example, is not interchangeable with several other diesel categories.

API also describes an Aftermarket Audit Program that began testing packaged and bulk engine oils in 1994. Its audits compare licensed oils with formulations on file and include viscosity-at-100°C and high-temperature/high-shear testing. These checks are part of licensing oversight; they do not replace the vehicle manufacturer’s oil requirements.

What to check on an oil bottle

  • The SAE viscosity grade matches the one specified in your owner’s manual.
  • The API and, where applicable, ILSAC performance category is suitable for your vehicle.
  • Any vehicle-manufacturer specification or approval required by the manual is stated.

For example, ExxonMobil’s product sheet identifies Mobil 1 5W-30 as SAE 5W-30 and lists product-specific specifications and applications. That makes it an example of a bottle carrying the grade—not proof that it is suitable for every engine. Confirm all of your vehicle’s requirements before buying.
