Use the App Review Guidelines for the criteria your app must meet, and Apple’s submission instructions for preparing and sending it through App Store Connect. A complete submission includes accurate product and privacy details, working reviewer access, and any documentation required for the app’s features or storefronts.
What Apple reviews
Apple reviews apps and updates, app bundles, In-App Purchases, In-App Events, App Store metadata, and other submitted content. Its review process checks whether submissions are safe, secure, and reliable. The App Review Guidelines set technical, content, and design criteria; they are distinct from the App Store Connect steps used to prepare a submission.

Prepare the App Store Connect submission
Before submitting a new app or update, make sure the product page and app information are complete and accurate. Apple requires privacy details for the app and integrated third-party partners to submit new apps and updates.
- Complete the app name, icon, description, screenshots, previews, and keywords.
- Answer the age-rating questionnaire.
- Provide privacy details for the app and third-party code it uses.
- Indicate supported accessibility features in App Store Connect, where applicable.
- Check that declared device capabilities match what the app actually supports.
Give reviewers enough context and working access
In the review information, explain the app clearly and provide the access needed to evaluate its core features. Apple’s review preparation guidance asks for context tailored to the submission:
#1 Best Overall
- Used Book in Good Condition
- New app: Describe its concept and business model. For an update, explain what changed and where reviewers can find significant new content or features.
- Purpose and audience: State what the app does and who it is intended for.
- Test environment: Identify tested devices and operating-system versions, external services or platforms required for core functionality, and regional differences.
- Account-based features: Supply current demo credentials. If the app has different account types, provide access for each; explain how reviewers can obtain authentication codes if needed.
- Hardware-dependent features: Provide a video showing the app running on a physical Apple device as it pairs and interacts with the required hardware. Apple specifies a video, not a screen recording.
- Regulated services or protected content: Attach applicable regulatory documentation, licenses, partnership evidence, or permission to use third-party intellectual property.
Match documentation to the app and its storefronts
Supporting documents are conditional, not a universal checklist. Apple’s examples include medical regulatory clearance or supporting studies, cryptocurrency exchange licenses, evidence of a financial institution or lender partnership, gambling or lottery licenses, and permission to use another party’s intellectual property. Requirements can differ by country or region, so provide evidence relevant to each storefront where the app will be available. See Apple’s review guidance for review preparation details.
Make privacy permission requests specific
If the app accesses protected resources such as the camera, location, microphone, or health data, its permission prompts should explain why. Apple says purpose strings must clearly and completely describe how the app uses the requested data or resource. Name the feature the permission enables and give a concrete example in a short, complete sentence; simply repeating the resource name or giving a vague benefit is not enough.
Responsibility also extends to third-party SDKs and libraries in the app. Check what APIs they access, provide a valid and specific purpose string where required, and remove unneeded API references. Apple’s protected-resource documentation states: “Ensure your purpose strings clearly and completely describe your use of the data.”
How long App Review takes—and what to do next
Apple’s App Review status guidance, consulted in October 2026, sets goals of reviewing at least 50% of submissions in less than 24 hours and 90% in less than 48 hours. These are goals, not promised turnaround times for an individual submission. Complex or novel cases, documentation checks, regulated content, new platform capabilities, and sensitive features can take longer. Complete review information can make the process faster and more predictable.
Track progress and messages in App Store Connect. Apple’s review guidance explains how to respond to issues:
- If a problem can be fixed through metadata or a server-side adjustment, reply to the review message once it is fixed; a new build is not always needed.
- If the issue requires a code or build change, upload a new build and submit it for review.
- Resolve all identified issues before resubmitting. If you disagree with a rejection, you can appeal to the App Review Board.
Plan for the April 2027 SDK minimum
Apple’s submission page says that, starting in April 2027, apps and games uploaded to App Store Connect must meet new minimum SDK requirements. For iOS and iPadOS apps, the stated requirement is the iOS and iPadOS 27 SDK or later, while targeting iOS 15 or later. Apps for tvOS, visionOS, and watchOS must use the corresponding 27 SDK or later. This is a future requirement as of October 2026; check Apple’s submission page again before submitting near or after its effective date.
