AirPods 5 make more sense if you prefer an open fit or want to spend less; AirPods Pro 3 make more sense if you want stronger noise cancellation, more audio detail, longer reported listening time, or Pro-only health and workout features. That is the trade-off in Mashable reviewer Stan Schroeder’s September 21, 2026 review—not a controlled comparison or a universal verdict. The reported prices and battery figures below come from that review and should be checked against Apple’s current product information before purchase.
AirPods 5 or AirPods Pro 3: which should you choose?
| What matters to you | Better fit, according to Schroeder’s review | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Open fit; dislike of sealed tips | AirPods 5 | Its open design avoids the in-ear seal of Pro 3. That comfort preference comes at the cost of isolation. |
| Noise cancellation | AirPods Pro 3 | Schroeder found Pro 3’s ANC better. He reported that AirPods 5’s ANC varied with positioning and reduced lower-frequency noise more effectively than higher-pitched hiss. |
| Audio detail | AirPods Pro 3 | Schroeder heard more detail across the range from Pro 3; some listeners may nevertheless prefer AirPods 5’s more open sound. |
| Lower reported entry price | AirPods 5 | The review reported US$129 for the basic variant, versus US$149 for the version with a wireless charging case. These are review-reported prices, not verified live prices. |
| Health and workout features | AirPods Pro 3 | The review says Hearing Test, Hearing Protection, and a heart-rate sensor remain Pro-exclusive; check Apple documentation for current availability and compatibility. |
The case for Pro is not that every listener needs a sealed earbud. It is that listeners who value stronger cancellation, more detail, or those specific features may consider the higher reported price worthwhile.

What does AirPods 5’s open fit mean for ANC?
AirPods 5 is an open-fit design, so it does not seal the ear like Pro 3. Schroeder says the buds’ position affected how much cancellation he perceived: in his listening, lower-frequency noise was reduced more effectively than higher-pitched hiss. He also found performance could be muddled with complex or dense music. These are the reviewer’s impressions, not laboratory measurements or guarantees for every listener.

How do they sound?
Schroeder found AirPods 5 sounded much like AirPods 4, while Pro 3 delivered more detail across the audio range. He also noted that some people may simply prefer the more open sound of AirPods 5. Those are subjective listening judgments; the review does not provide controlled measurements that establish a universal winner.

The review recommends paying the reported extra US$20 for the wireless-case AirPods 5, citing one additional hour of listening time and volume swipe control as well as wireless charging. That recommendation depends on valuing those additions. If you do not need them, the basic version has the lower reported entry price.
Which AirPods 5 case version should you buy?
- Choose the basic variant if minimizing the reported purchase price matters more than wireless charging, volume swipe control, or the extra reported battery time.
- Choose the wireless charging case version if you will use wireless charging or volume swipe control and find the review’s reported one-hour battery difference worth the price gap.
Those feature and battery comparisons are claims in Schroeder’s review; verify current model details before buying.

Which features are reported as Pro-only?
The review says AirPods 5 inherits Conversation Awareness, Adaptive Audio, Transparency, Live Translation, and Siri AI. It identifies Hearing Test, Hearing Protection, and a heart-rate sensor as remaining exclusive to Pro. Exact feature names, regional availability, and device or operating-system compatibility may change; consult Apple’s current documentation for the specific model and region rather than treating the review as a complete compatibility list.

Choose AirPods Pro 3 if you prioritize stronger ANC and sound detail, want the longer listening time reported in this review, or will use its reported health and workout features—and are comfortable with an in-ear seal. Choose AirPods 5 if open fit and lower reported price matter more and you can accept less effective noise cancellation. Schroeder’s personal preference was clear: “The AirPods Pro 3 are still my favorite earbuds.” That is his verdict, not a rule for every listener.
