What is different between the AirPods 5 models?
Both versions are open-fit earbuds with active noise cancellation (ANC). Apple lists Adaptive Audio, Transparency, Personalized Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking, Live Translation and Siri AI for AirPods 5. Live Translation availability varies by language and region.

Is the Wireless Charging Case worth the premium?
If the price difference is still about $20, the higher-tier model adds practical conveniences rather than a different set of core listening features. The swipe control lets you adjust volume on the earbuds, while the case can charge wirelessly and play a sound to help locate it through Find My. Apple also claims one additional hour per charge and two additional hours with the case when ANC is enabled.

That makes the extra cost easier to justify if you use wireless charging, often adjust volume without reaching for your phone, or value the longer stated battery life. If you will charge over USB-C and do not need those extras, the standard version retains the shared ANC and other listed AirPods 5 features.
How good is AirPods 5 noise cancellation?
Apple says AirPods 5 offer up to 1.5 times more ANC than AirPods 4 with ANC. That is a manufacturer comparison, not an independent measurement. In his September 18, 2026 review, Engadget’s Billy Steele said steady background noise was reduced more effectively, while human voices remained more challenging. That is his listening observation, not a controlled test.

Both AirPods 5 configurations include ANC, so the case upgrade is not an ANC upgrade. Consider the claimed improvement in context: noise cancellation may help with consistent ambient sounds, but the review does not suggest voices disappear.
Should you choose AirPods Pro 3 instead?
AirPods 5 are open-fit; AirPods Pro 3 use silicone tips. Fit is a meaningful distinction: if you prefer the seal of silicone tips, or want the additional features Apple lists for Pro 3, compare that model before deciding.

Apple lists up to eight hours of listening on one charge with ANC enabled for AirPods Pro 3 and up to 24 hours with the case. These are Apple estimates, so they should not be treated as directly comparable real-world test results.

Steele concluded, “There should only be one model of the AirPods 5,” favoring the Wireless Charging Case version. His recommendation rests on the added controls and case features alongside its longer stated battery life. It is a reviewer’s judgment, not a claim that the upgrade suits every buyer: the standard model may make more sense when those conveniences are not worth the price gap to you.
