For Android, the common official driver is UiAutomator2; for iOS-family apps, use XCUITest, which requires a macOS host. Installing Appium alone is not enough to automate a device.
How Appium fits together
Appium is a server that accepts WebDriver commands from a test client. A separate driver translates those commands into automation for a target platform. That is why the server and the platform driver are separate setup steps: the driver connects Appium to the platform’s automation technology and has its own prerequisites. Choose the platform and driver

These are not interchangeable drivers. Pick based on the application’s target platform; the catalog lists other drivers, including Espresso, for other use cases.
Install Appium and prepare the host
- Choose Android or iOS first. This determines the platform driver and whether a Mac is required.
- Check current system requirements. Appium’s release and driver prerequisites can change. Consult the current CLI documentation and chosen driver’s setup page rather than relying on older Appium 2-era version advice.
- Install the Appium server using the current official installation instructions. The CLI is used to start the server and manage extensions. This guide does not prescribe a version-specific package command because the linked current docs are the authority for your release and environment.
- Install and configure the platform toolchain. For Android, install Android Studio/SDK components and Java as specified by the UiAutomator2 quickstart, then make the required SDK and Java paths available to your shell. For iOS, use macOS and the current XCUITest requirements.
Install the Android driver and validate setup
For an Android beginner, UiAutomator2 is the standard official starting point. In a terminal with Appium installed, run:

appium driver doctor uiautomator2Resolve required setup problems it identifies, especially unavailable SDK or Java paths. The doctor may also report optional fixes; distinguish those from required fixes. The quickstart’s clean setup is one with no required fixes.
Start the server with the Appium CLI command documented for your installed release. After driver installation, restart a server that was already running. Inspect its startup output and confirm UiAutomator2 is listed as an available driver. The extension CLI reference documents driver management commands.

Configure a first client test
Your test client must connect to the running Appium server and request the intended platform and driver. For Android with UiAutomator2, the driver identity is UiAutomator2; the capabilities must identify the intended platform and automation name. Select the client language you use and follow the matching language-specific sample in the UiAutomator2 quickstart. The exact client code and capability object depend on the client library and app-under-test, so use that documented sample rather than mixing syntax from another language or driver.
Use an emulator or a physical Android device as the target. Ensure the device is running and visible to the Android tooling before asking the test to create a session. For iOS, use the XCUITest driver’s current guide and its platform-specific client example; do not reuse Android driver settings.

Common setup problems
- The server starts, but the driver is missing: installing Appium does not install a platform driver. Install the correct driver, then restart the server and check its available-driver output.
- The driver doctor reports SDK or Java problems: install the required Android SDK/platform tools and Java prerequisites, then correct the environment paths specified by the UiAutomator2 quickstart. Run the doctor again.
- The test requests the wrong automation: make the platform and automation name match the selected driver. For Android UiAutomator2, the automation name is
UiAutomator2; use the XCUITest guide for iOS. - iOS automation is attempted from a non-Mac host: Appium’s iOS quickstart requirement is macOS. Move the iOS setup to a Mac and follow XCUITest prerequisites.
- A driver was installed while the server was running: stop and restart the server so it can load the newly installed extension.
- A version-specific error persists: compare your Appium release, driver requirements, and CLI syntax with the current official documentation rather than applying old setup advice from another major version.
