To rotate livestream archives into a YouTube playlist without duplicates, check the candidate archive’s video ID against every video ID already in the playlist before adding it. In YouTube Studio, do that check by inspection; with the YouTube Data API, list the playlist items and insert only if there is no matching video ID. If removing an existing duplicate through the API, delete the playlist item ID—not the video ID.
What “duplicate” means in a YouTube playlist
A playlist entry is a playlistItem, a resource with its own item ID and a reference to the underlying video. The video ID tells you whether that video is already present; the playlist-item ID identifies the particular entry to update or delete. Those IDs are not interchangeable. Google’s playlistItems reference documents the resource fields and operations.

For example, if a playlist item has video ID VIDEO_X and playlist-item ID ITEM_42, a candidate archive with video ID VIDEO_X is already represented. Do not add it again. If that entry is the one to remove, delete ITEM_42, not VIDEO_X. These IDs are illustrative, not real YouTube records.
Choose a manual check or an API workflow
| Method | Best for | Duplicate check and ordering | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Studio or YouTube interface | Occasional additions and short playlists | Inspect existing entries, add the archive once, then reorder manually. | A person can miss an existing entry in a long playlist. |
| YouTube Data API | Recurring updates or larger playlists | List all playlist items, compare video IDs, conditionally insert, and update position when needed. | Requires authorized API access and code that distinguishes item IDs from video IDs. |
The API approach is easier to audit for repeated rotation; for occasional maintenance, Studio avoids building an integration. Neither approach should rely on YouTube silently preventing duplicates: the official documentation describes the relevant operations but does not clearly promise that repeated video IDs are rejected.

Add an archive once in YouTube Studio
- Identify the livestream archive you want to add, then open the target playlist in YouTube Studio.
- Inspect the playlist for the same video. For a long playlist or recurring workflow, keep a log of processed video IDs so you can check consistently.
- If an unwanted duplicate entry is already there, remove that entry from the playlist. Removing an entry is different from deleting the underlying video from your channel.
- Add the archive once and arrange it in the desired position using the playlist’s ordering controls. YouTube Help describes playlist editing, adding, removing, and ordering videos in its playlist management instructions.
- If you want the playlist to repeat during playback, enable loop in the player. Looping repeats the current playlist sequence; it does not add new livestream archives.
YouTube Help documents manual playlist actions, but does not describe a built-in switch that automatically rotates each new livestream archive into a playlist. Treat membership maintenance as a separate step.
Deduplicate recurring updates with the YouTube Data API
- Call
playlistItems.listfor the target playlist and fetch every page of results. Each item exposes its ownidand the associated video ID, commonly throughsnippet.resourceId.videoIdorcontentDetails.videoId. See the list method reference. - Compare the candidate archive’s video ID with every returned video ID. Do not compare the candidate to playlist-item IDs.
- If there is a match, skip insertion. If multiple entries already point to that same video, decide which playlist entry to keep and note the playlist-item ID of each unwanted one.
- If there is no match, call
playlistItems.insertwith the targetsnippet.playlistId,snippet.resourceId.kindset toyoutube#video, andsnippet.resourceId.videoIdset to the candidate video ID. The insert reference describes the request. - For a specific position, update the desired playlist item and set
snippet.positionto the zero-based index. The update reference describes the operation; manual ordering may be necessary for position changes. - To remove a redundant entry, call
playlistItems.deletewith that entry’s playlist-item ID. See the delete reference. - After writing, list the playlist again or otherwise verify the resulting membership and order.
Prevent races between simultaneous jobs
If two automations can process the same archive at once, serialize writes or recheck membership immediately before inserting. The API documentation reviewed does not promise transactional deduplication or an idempotency key for this workflow, so the extra coordination is an engineering safeguard, not a YouTube guarantee.

Handle livestream archives as videos, not live-state signals
YouTube’s Live Streaming API models a broadcast and its stream as separate resources, and includes broadcast archive-related settings. A playlist still needs an available video resource to add; do not assume that a playlist follows the channel’s live state or that a broadcast archive appears in it automatically. Confirm the archive exists and has the intended privacy and access state before attempting to include it. See the Live Streaming API documentation and YouTube’s live stream archiving guidance.

A series playlist is intended for an official set of videos, not general duplicate prevention. YouTube says a verified account is required; a video cannot be in more than one series playlist, and only videos uploaded by the creator with rights to them can be included. Troubleshoot common rotation problems
- The same archive was added again: Compare video IDs across the full playlist, including all API result pages. Remove the redundant playlist entry by its playlist-item ID.
- A delete request targets the wrong identifier: Check the resource fields first. The deletion target is the playlist item’s
id; the video ID is nested in the resource reference. - The archive is missing from the playlist: Check that the broadcast has produced an available archive and that its privacy/access state permits the intended playlist use before inserting.
- The playlist repeats but has no new archive: Loop changes playback of existing entries only. Add each new archive through Studio or a conditional API insert.
- Two jobs create duplicates despite a pre-check: They may have listed the playlist before either wrote. Coordinate the jobs so writes are serialized, then verify membership after the insert.
- The item is present but in the wrong place: Reorder it manually in Studio or update the playlist item’s zero-based position through the API.
Or let it run in the cloud
Playlist deduplication is a separate task from keeping a YouTube channel live around the clock. If you stream uploaded videos continuously, StreamNeo can loop a recording or playlist from the cloud: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
