Appium 2.0’s defining change was modularity: the server no longer bundled platform automation support. You installed the server, then added the driver for the platform you wanted to test; plugins supplied optional server extensions. That separation also meant drivers could be updated independently of the server.
The beta is a historical release stage, not a verified current installation target. The available sources do not establish its exact version, original announcement date, or whether a beta package tag remains available. What changed in Appium 2.0?
The Appium 2.0 migration guide called it “the most major new release of Appium in over 5 years.” Its practical significance for Appium 1.x users was a change in how the server, platform support, and extensions were packaged and managed.

In Appium 1.x, platform drivers came with the server. In Appium 2, installing the server alone does not provide a driver for automating Android, iOS, or another platform. Drivers are installed separately through the Appium extension CLI, or selected during server installation.

This modularity lets drivers and the server have separate versions and release schedules. A driver update may be available without a new server release, but you must track the driver version and its compatibility deliberately.
Plugins extend the server
Appium 2 plugins can intercept or change commands, extend server behavior, or adjust aspects of the HTTP server. Drivers provide platform automation; plugins add optional server capabilities. Install only the extensions your test setup needs, and consult their own documentation for supported options.

The default endpoint path changed
Appium 1.x commonly used /wd/hub as its default URL path; Appium 2 uses /. A client configured to connect to the old path may fail to create a session even when the server is running. To retain the legacy path, start Appium 2 with --base-path=/wd/hub, or change the client’s server URL to match the new root path.
W3C WebDriver and capabilities need attention
Appium 2 removed support for the older JSON Wire Protocol and Mobile JSON Wire Protocol and uses W3C WebDriver. Review older clients and test code for W3C compatibility. Appium-specific capabilities need a vendor prefix; the migration guide recommends appium: unless the driver’s documentation specifies otherwise. Driver-specific commands and options may have moved into the driver that owns them, so check that driver’s documentation when a former server option no longer works.

Server configuration can live in a file
Server options can be supplied in JSON, JavaScript, or YAML configuration files as well as on the command line. This can make a repeatable setup easier to maintain, but the applicable options still depend on the server, installed drivers, and plugins.

Check the current official installation documentation for supported Node.js and npm versions and current package instructions before setting up a new environment.

- Install the Appium server. The migration guide gives this example:
npm install --location=global appium. - Install the platform driver you need. For example, its guide shows
appium driver install uiautomator2for the UiAutomator2 driver. Select the driver for the platform and automation approach your tests require; a server installation without that driver is not sufficient to automate the platform. - Alternatively, choose drivers during installation. The guide demonstrates
npm install --location=global appium --drivers=xcuitest,uiautomator2. This selects the XCUITest and UiAutomator2 drivers alongside the server. - Confirm the driver is available. Use the Appium extension CLI and the installed driver’s documentation to check your extensions and their supported configuration. Server and driver versions are independent, so record and manage both as part of the test environment.
- Align the client endpoint and protocol. Use the root path expected by Appium 2, or configure
--base-path=/wd/hubif your client must keep the legacy path. Confirm the client uses W3C WebDriver. - Review capabilities and driver-specific settings. Prefix Appium-specific capabilities with
appium:unless the driver directs otherwise, and consult the driver documentation for options or commands that changed ownership. - Use Appium Inspector rather than the old Desktop inspector. The migration guide notes that the older Appium Desktop inspector is not compatible with Appium 2 and points users to Appium Inspector.

With hosted device testing, the provider maintains the Appium server environment. Appium’s migration guide notes that a server maintainer—including a cloud provider—is responsible for making drivers and plugins available. Before choosing a hosted environment, verify that it has the platform driver, plugin, capabilities, and device access your tests require. The choice is about operational ownership and configuration needs, not a universal ranking.
