What the Apify screenshot Actor can capture
The listing accepts a list of public URLs and can produce PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF captures. For each URL, you can request the viewport, full page, or the first matching CSS element. It provides desktop, laptop, tablet, and mobile presets, custom viewport values, dark-mode emulation, wait conditions, optional scrolling to load lazy content, and CSS rules to hide elements such as consent banners. Hiding a banner with CSS is not the same as clicking it or recording consent.
The named presets are desktop 1920×1080, laptop 1366×768, tablet 800×1280 at 2×, and mobile 412×915 at 2.625×. These are listing-specific values, so check the Actor’s current Input tab before building around them.
Batch size, concurrency, and tall pages
- The listing states a maximum of 1,000 public URLs per run.
- Concurrency is two by default and configurable up to five.
- The default maximum full-page height is 15,000 pixels and is configurable. Captures taller than the selected maximum are marked truncated.
- WebP has a 16,383-pixel limit per side, so a very tall page may result in a shorter image than the requested full-page height.

Results and storage
The Actor produces records per URL and stores capture files in the run’s default key-value store. Records can include status, requested and final URL, HTTP status, file link, dimensions, capture duration, and error details; a run-level summary is also stored. Files count toward Apify storage, and unnamed run storage is subject to plan retention. Plan retention and the currently available export paths should be checked in your Apify account before relying on a long-term archive.
Can the Apify screenshot Actor access logged-in pages?
No—not this Actor as described in its listing. It captures what an anonymous visitor sees. It does not log in, accept cookies, solve CAPTCHAs, rotate proxies, or change identity to get past bot protection. It rejects URLs containing credentials, localhost, private networks, and non-web schemes. A site that blocks automation may return an error or a block page.
Use it for public-page snapshots and archive tasks, not private dashboards or attempts to bypass access controls. Playwright gives you code-level control to build an authorized workflow for pages you are permitted to access, but the Playwright visual-comparison documentation does not guarantee that a given site will allow automation.

What Playwright adds for screenshot testing
Playwright is browser automation software. Its Playwright Test runner supports visual comparisons with await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot(). On an initial run it creates reference screenshots; later runs compare captures with those baselines. The documentation says it takes screenshots repeatedly until two consecutive captures match, then saves the last capture as the baseline.
Reviewable baselines and tolerances
Snapshot files live with the tests and should be committed and reviewed alongside code changes. When an intentional visual change occurs, update expected screenshots with --update-snapshots. The visual-comparison options include maxDiffPixels for a pixel-difference tolerance and stylePath for a stylesheet that can filter volatile page elements. Keep the rendering environment consistent
Playwright warns: “Browser rendering can vary based on the host OS, version, settings, hardware, power source (battery vs. power adapter), headless mode, and other factors.” Its documentation recommends using the same environment that generated the baseline. Therefore, visual regression is most useful when your team controls the browser and execution environment and reviews baseline changes; it should not be treated as a promise of pixel-identical output across arbitrary machines.

Cost: compare capture charges with the cost of running tests
The Apify Store listing for reestri/web-screenshot, accessed October 3, 2026, displayed a starting rate of $2.00 per 1,000 screenshots. Its pricing tab stated $0.002 per viewport or element screenshot, $0.004 per full-page image, and $0.004 per PDF, plus a $0.002 default Actor start event at 2 GB. The listing’s example for 1,000 viewport shots in one run was $2.002. These are mutable prices for this particular listing, not an Apify-wide tariff or a guaranteed future price; verify current terms before estimating a job.
The listing says failed URLs are not charged in specified cases. Confirm which failure cases qualify in the live pricing details. Stored files also count toward Apify storage, with unnamed run storage subject to plan retention.
Playwright itself is software, but operating a screenshot suite still uses compute and engineering time. Account for CI or machine resources, test maintenance, baseline review, and debugging rather than comparing its software price alone with a hosted capture event. No independent speed, image-quality, reliability, or value benchmark establishes a universal cost winner.

Which should you choose?
Choose the Apify Actor for a managed public-page batch
- You want to submit URLs and capture settings without writing and maintaining a browser script.
- You need image or PDF outputs and structured records from a hosted run.
- You want to trigger a run manually, through an API or CLI, or on a schedule. Apify documents these options for its general Actor system; confirm what is available for this Actor and your account.
Choose Playwright for a code-controlled workflow
- Screenshots need to follow browser actions or application-specific setup.
- You want visual assertions in an automated test suite and reviewable baselines.
- You can keep test execution sufficiently consistent and maintain the code, environment, and snapshot updates.
Use both when the jobs differ
A team can use the Actor for managed public-site archive or monitoring captures and Playwright for visual quality gates on its own application. Keep their purposes distinct: one is a hosted capture run; the other is a programmable test workflow.
