The server can operate without your home computer, but a single Droplet is not a guarantee of uninterrupted service. This walkthrough covers a secure Ubuntu setup, both software routes, YouTube’s encoder settings, testing, and the limits of a continuous stream.
Before you start: channel, source, and schedule
- YouTube channel: Live streaming must be enabled. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. Create or schedule an encoder stream in Live Control Room before configuring your encoder. YouTube’s encoder workflow.
- Video source: Decide whether the Droplet will send a file or playlist, or receive an incoming feed such as RTSP. These are different topologies and affect software and firewall needs.
- Droplet capacity: A Droplet is a Linux virtual machine with allocated CPU, memory, disk, and network resources. DigitalOcean’s production setup example uses Ubuntu 24.04 and a 2-vCPU/2-GB Droplet in a
doctlexample; it does not establish that this size can handle every stream or transcoding workload. Choose based on whether you are simply remuxing or also encoding, and test the actual workload. DigitalOcean’s recommended Droplet setup. - Transfer allowance: A stream sends data continuously. Estimate egress from the selected bitrate and operating schedule, then compare it with the current plan’s transfer terms before committing. The total depends on bitrate, audio, protocol overhead, and hours streamed.
“24/7” describes the intended operating schedule, not a promise of uninterrupted uptime or one complete YouTube archive. A server, network path, encoder process, or YouTube ingest can fail; plan for monitoring and recovery.

Choose the streaming route

Use the direct route if the source and output path are simple and you can supervise the process. Consider SRS when you need its listed ingest and restreaming capabilities. Neither route is proven faster, more stable, or cheaper by the cited setup documentation.
Create and secure the Droplet
- Choose an image and size. Select a current Ubuntu LTS image; Ubuntu 24.04 is DigitalOcean’s example. Pick a plan for the actual codec, resolution, frame rate, source, and any transcoding. Do not assume the example 2-vCPU/2-GB plan is sufficient for your workload.
- Use SSH-key authentication. Add your public key during Droplet creation. After connecting, create a non-root account with sudo access and use it for routine administration.
- Apply a cloud firewall. DigitalOcean recommends initially allowing inbound SSH and permitting outbound traffic. A feed that only pushes to YouTube generally needs outbound connectivity, not an open inbound RTMP port. Add inbound ports only if your architecture accepts publishers or exposes a control panel; restrict source addresses where possible. DigitalOcean describes Cloud Firewalls as a free, stateful firewall service for Droplets. Recommended setup and Cloud Firewall documentation.
- Enable monitoring and backups. Monitor resource use and keep a recovery path for configuration and source files. Backups do not replace process supervision or stream-health checks.
- Optionally automate first boot. DigitalOcean user data accepts Bash scripts or cloud-config, which cloud-init consumes on first boot. This can automate initial configuration but is optional. DigitalOcean user data documentation.
Set up the YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. If this is the channel’s first live stream, allow for YouTube’s stated activation delay of up to 24 hours.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from the stream settings into the encoder. YouTube describes a stream key as similar to a password and address; do not put it in a public script, screenshot, or source repository. Use a protected configuration file with limited permissions or another secret-management method.
- If the key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains the URL/key handoff and key reset. YouTube encoder workflow.
Configure FFmpeg or SRS for YouTube
Direct FFmpeg
Install FFmpeg from a trusted source suitable for your Ubuntu release, then inspect the input and confirm which video and audio streams it contains. Configure the output for YouTube’s ingest URL and key, preferring RTMPS. Select a codec and bitrate that the source and server can sustain. If you transcode, monitor CPU and memory; if the media already matches the desired output, avoid assuming that transcoding is necessary.

There is no universal safe command for every file, playlist, audio layout, FFmpeg build, or reconnect requirement. Test the actual input and verify that the output reaches YouTube before setting it to run unattended. Add process supervision with a restart policy, and inspect logs after both normal exits and failures. A restart policy can relaunch an encoder process; it cannot by itself guarantee that YouTube accepts the stream or that the server remains available.
DigitalOcean Marketplace SRS
Deploy the SRS image from the Marketplace and follow its current application instructions for configuring the chosen input and YouTube destination. The listing identifies supported protocols and functions, but exact setup screens, ports, and version labels may change. Keep inbound access closed unless your selected workflow needs incoming publishing or a control panel. For every required port, confirm the current SRS configuration and restrict who can reach it.

Use YouTube’s encoder settings as a starting point
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Its published encoder settings include H.264, H.265, or AV1; up to 60 fps; CBR; and a recommended 2-second keyframe interval that must not exceed 4 seconds. Choose settings appropriate for your source and server, then check stream health rather than treating a recommended bitrate as a guarantee of quality. YouTube encoder settings.

These figures are YouTube’s published H.264 guidance, not independent quality measurements. The appropriate rate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For an initial lower-bandwidth test, 480p30 H.264 at YouTube’s recommended 4 Mbps is one possible starting point; 720p30 is listed at 8 Mbps. YouTube’s encoder bitrate table.

Estimate bandwidth and ongoing cost
YouTube advises allowing 20% more upload bandwidth than the stream bitrate and checking available upload capacity. Its guidance states that the stream’s total bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth. For a Droplet, apply that headroom to the outbound path and estimate transfer as bitrate multiplied by seconds streamed; audio and protocol overhead add to the total. Before choosing a plan, check DigitalOcean’s current Droplet specifications, regional availability, pricing, and transfer terms. The cited material does not establish one plan’s cost or capacity for your stream, and the required size depends on workload. Include any separately billed backup or storage choice in your own estimate.

Test, supervise, and recover
- Start with a short test. Start the encoder and inspect the preview and stream-health status in Live Control Room. Confirm video, audio, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate before scheduling a longer run.
- Watch the Droplet. Check CPU, memory, network output, disk space if recording, and encoder logs. An overloaded server can fail to maintain the chosen output.
- Test recovery deliberately. Confirm that your service manager restarts an exited encoder and that the process can reconnect after a dropped ingest. Review logs and YouTube stream health after recovery; a process restart is not proof of a recovered broadcast.
- Manage recordings and files. If SRS or another setup records locally, monitor disk use and implement a retention policy. Recording is separate from YouTube’s live archive behavior.
- Keep a human check in the loop. Alerts and restart policies help detect or handle some failures, but a single Droplet remains a single point of failure. Do not describe it as fault tolerant without additional, implemented redundancy.
What “24/7” does—and does not—mean on YouTube
YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that one continuous 24-hour stream will become one complete archive, nor does it guarantee uninterrupted long-running ingest. Troubleshooting
YouTube does not show an incoming stream
- Check that live streaming is enabled for the channel and that first-time activation has completed.
- Verify the stream URL and key in the encoder, and confirm the process is running. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the configuration.
- Confirm the Droplet can make outbound connections and that the chosen destination is RTMPS-compatible.
Stream health reports a bitrate or connection problem
- Compare the configured bitrate with the encoder settings for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Check sustained outbound bandwidth and keep YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Reduce resolution or bitrate if the server or outbound path cannot sustain the chosen settings.
The feed stops after running for a while
- Inspect service and encoder logs for process exits, network failures, or resource exhaustion.
- Confirm the supervisor restart policy and test whether the encoder reconnects successfully. Restarting a process alone does not establish that the YouTube feed recovered.
- Check server resource use and, where applicable, available disk space for recordings.
An incoming publisher cannot reach SRS
- Check the actual SRS configuration and required listening ports. Do not assume port 1935 must be open for a server that only sends an outbound YouTube feed.
- Allow only the necessary inbound access in the cloud firewall and restrict source addresses where possible.
