First identify which timeout occurred: the screenshot Actor’s page-navigation timeout, Apify’s overall Actor run timeout, or the time limit on the request waiting for the run. They are separate limits and require different fixes. The field names and ranges below are for Jan Čurn’s Screenshot Taker Actor, not every Apify screenshot Actor. Check the exact Actor you are running and its current input schema before copying settings.
Identify which timeout fired
Start with the run status and logs. A navigation timeout means the Actor did not reach its configured page-navigation completion condition in time. A run timeout means Apify stopped the entire Actor run. A caller-wait timeout means the HTTP request or client stopped waiting; the run may still be active.

- Open the run in Apify Console and check its status and logs for a page-load/navigation error or a run-level timeout.
- If the logs identify a navigation timeout, adjust the Actor’s page-load timeout and, if justified, its retry count.
- If navigation succeeds but the screenshot misses content rendered later, tune the navigation condition or post-load delay instead.
- If the run continues after the request fails, investigate the synchronous request or client wait limit rather than assuming the Actor stopped.
- If Apify marks the run
TIMED-OUT, adjust the Actor run timeout and investigate workload and resource use.
Without the Actor ID, run logs, input and target URL, it is not possible to tell which limit caused a particular failure.

| Input field | Documented value | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
pageLoadTimeoutSecs |
1–180 seconds; default 60 | How long page loading is allowed before it is treated as failed. Page-load timeouts are retried like other page-load errors. |
pageMaxRetryCount |
0–10; default 2 | Retries after a page-load error or timeout. More retries can help intermittent failures, but add attempts to the workload. |
waitUntil |
load by default; also domcontentloaded, networkidle0, and networkidle2 |
The navigation completion condition the page must meet before the workflow proceeds. |
delaySecs |
0–120 seconds; default 0 | An additional wait after loading and before the screenshot, useful when content appears late. |
When to increase the page-load timeout
If the logs show that navigation itself exceeded its limit, increase pageLoadTimeoutSecs within the supported 180-second maximum. Raise it only as far as the site and job require; it is not an unlimited wait. Consider retries when failures are intermittent, rather than automatically increasing retries for a consistently slow or unreachable site.
Choose a navigation condition for the page
waitUntil determines when navigation counts as complete. A page with long-running background requests may not reach a network-idle condition promptly, so the documented alternatives are worth testing against the page’s behavior. The Actor schema lists the conditions but does not say that one is universally best for slow sites.

Use delay for late content, not slow navigation
delaySecs begins after the chosen loading condition is met. It can give late-rendered content time to appear, but it does not increase the time allowed for navigation to meet that condition. Use a delay when the page has loaded but its screenshot is taken before content settles.
Distinguish the run timeout from the caller’s wait limit
Apify Actor run timeout
The platform-level run timeout is configured in seconds and can vary by Actor template. When the run limit is exceeded, Apify stops the run and reports TIMED-OUT. Run options and API calls can override the timeout; for the Actor run timeout setting, zero means no timeout. This is independent of the page’s pageLoadTimeoutSecs. See Apify’s run options documentation and run API documentation.

If the whole run ends, inspect how many URLs it was processing, how many attempts each needed, the target pages’ weight and the run’s resource usage before simply raising the run limit.
Synchronous request and client wait limits
Apify’s synchronous task API fails the HTTP request if the run has not finished within 300 seconds. That request timeout does not abort the run itself, according to the synchronous task API documentation. Use the asynchronous task run endpoint for long jobs: it returns the run object without making the caller hold a request open until completion, after which you can poll the run or retrieve its results. SDK options likewise distinguish the run timeout from how long the caller waits.

Check memory and workload before scaling resources
Browser-based work can be resource-intensive, and heavy pages take longer to load. Apify’s resource documentation explains that memory allocation also determines CPU capacity and describes 4096 MB as a middle ground for many workloads. That is not a universal prescription: Apify cautions that a single-threaded Node.js Actor generally will not gain more CPU from allocations above 4096 MB unless it uses multi-threaded components.
- Review the run’s memory and CPU use and whether it processed multiple pages concurrently.
- Check whether the target page is unusually heavy or its requests are slow or unreliable.
- Change resources only when the run’s observed workload supports the change; more memory does not automatically fix a navigation condition or caller wait limit.
Do not apply one Actor’s input fields to another
“Apify Screenshot Actor” can refer to different Actors. The pageLoadTimeoutSecs, pageMaxRetryCount, waitUntil and delaySecs fields above belong to Screenshot Taker. Apify’s separate Website Screenshot Generator README describes URL capture, scrolling to the bottom and a configurable delay; it calls the Actor a simple example and points to Website Content Crawler for advanced crawling options. Do not copy Screenshot Taker field names into another Actor unless that Actor’s own schema confirms them.

Troubleshoot common timeout symptoms
| Symptom | Likely limit or issue | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Logs show a page-load error or navigation timeout, but the run remains active | Page-navigation timeout | For Screenshot Taker, raise pageLoadTimeoutSecs within 1–180 seconds; assess whether retries are appropriate. |
| Navigation completes, but content is missing from the image | Capture happens before late content appears | Choose a suitable documented waitUntil condition or add delaySecs. |
| The synchronous HTTP request fails, but the run is still running | Caller’s request wait expired | Use the asynchronous run endpoint, then poll the run or retrieve its results. |
Run status is TIMED-OUT |
Actor run timeout | Adjust the run timeout through run configuration or the API, and inspect run duration, page weight, memory use and concurrency. |
| Copied input fields are rejected or have no effect | Different screenshot Actor or schema | Confirm the Actor ID and use that Actor’s current input schema; these fields are documented for Screenshot Taker. |
| More memory does not resolve the timeout | The bottleneck may be navigation, waiting, run duration or another workload constraint | Use the run status and logs to identify the failing stage before changing resource allocation. |
Or skip the browser setup
If you would rather request a screenshot through an API than configure an Apify browser run, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. This cURL request returns an image for the target URL; replace the URL and supply your API key:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie and consent banners are accepted like a visitor and removed before capture, alongside supported newsletter popups and chat widgets. Bot checks, blank pages, failed loads and cache hits are not billed. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a synchronous task request timeout stop an Apify run?
No. Apify’s synchronous task API documentation says the HTTP request can fail after its 300-second wait limit without aborting the underlying run.
