If an Apify screenshot has the wrong dimensions, first check the exact Actor’s current input schema and the image’s actual pixel size. Viewport width and height, full-page capture, device scale factor, and page-load timing affect different parts of the result; field names and rules vary between Actors, so there is no universal setting to copy.
First identify what “wrong size” means
A screenshot’s browser viewport, captured page area, and saved image dimensions are related but not interchangeable.

- Viewport: the browser’s visible layout area before capture.
- Viewport screenshot: captures the visible window; depending on the Actor, the viewport height may set the image’s vertical cutoff.
- Full-page screenshot: captures content beyond the visible window, so the output can be much taller than the viewport.
- CSS dimensions and output pixels: a device scale factor may affect pixel density. Check the actual file rather than assuming the requested viewport equals the saved image’s pixel dimensions.
A tall image is not necessarily evidence that the viewport setting failed: full-page mode may be capturing the document’s scrollable height.
Check the exact Actor and its schema
Apify Store Actors have different input interfaces, defaults, limits, and output formats. Record the Store Actor URL or ID and version, then open its current input schema and identify the documented fields for viewport width and height, device preset, full-page capture, scale factor, and waiting behavior. Use the field names and allowed values shown for that Actor.

Apify’s official SDK guide demonstrates the general flow of opening a page, calling page.screenshot(), and saving the image buffer to the default key-value store; it does not define a universal input contract for Store Actors: Apify SDK screenshot guide.
Set the viewport and capture mode
- Choose viewport-only capture if the desired output is the visible browser window. Turn off full-page mode if the Actor defines that option as capturing the entire scrollable page.
- Enter the desired width and height using that Actor’s documented custom viewport controls.
- Check the selected preset. Some Actor schemas make custom dimensions effective only when a custom preset is selected; others say a device preset can override or ignore custom dimensions.
- Check scale factor separately. If the Actor exposes a device scale factor, consult its documentation to understand how it affects output pixels relative to CSS viewport units.
- Run the capture and inspect the saved image’s actual width and height. Compare those pixel dimensions with the intended output, not just the values submitted in the input.
For example, the Quality Website Screenshot API schema documents fullPage as defaulting to true; in that Actor, disabling it limits capture to the current viewport and cuts at viewportHeight. Those rules describe that Actor, not all Apify screenshot Actors.

The Website Screenshot Capture schema lists device presets, custom viewport dimensions, and deviceScaleFactor separately, and says custom viewport controls can be ignored when a device preset is selected. Check whether the Actor you use documents the same behavior.

If the Actor returns output metadata, compare its reported dimensions with the actual image. One Store Actor describes output fields including width, height, and pageHeight; these can help distinguish requested viewport settings from a full-page result, but that output shape is specific to that Actor: Screenshot Website output documentation.

Page content can also shift after navigation or while delayed elements load. Apify Academy advises waiting for navigation after a page transition and documents waiting for a selector as a more targeted option. Image format does not set image dimensions. Apify Academy says screenshots default to PNG and JPEG can be selected through the screenshot type option; treat that as a format choice, separate from viewport sizing.

Troubleshoot a mismatch in order
- Save the evidence: note the Actor URL or ID, version, submitted input, and actual output image dimensions.
- Verify the field names and limits: use the current schema for that exact Actor rather than copying input names from another Store page or a general SDK example.
- For a window-sized result, disable full-page mode if the Actor defines it as the switch between viewport and whole-page capture.
- Confirm the preset: if custom dimensions appear ignored, check whether a device preset is selected and whether the schema requires a custom preset.
- Interpret the height: if full-page capture is enabled, the image may follow the document’s scrollable height or an Actor-specific height limit rather than the viewport.
- Investigate scale factor: if the pixel dimensions differ despite the expected CSS viewport, check the Actor’s documentation for how scale factor is applied.
- Stabilize the page: if dimensions vary between runs, wait for navigation or a target selector and account for delayed content that changes layout before capture.
If these checks do not explain the result, the exact cause cannot be identified without the specific Actor, version, inputs, and output dimensions. Consult that Actor’s current schema and documentation; Store Actor behavior is not standardized.
