For separating a few authorized accounts’ cookies, logins and browser settings, start with standard browser profiles or containers. Choose a virtual machine (VM) when you need a separate operating-system environment or repeatable software-testing setup. An antidetect browser is intended to manage browser identity signals, but that does not make it a guarantee of anonymity or prevent a site from correlating activity.
Choose the boundary you actually need
These options work at different layers. A profile separates browser data; a VM provides a virtualized operating-system and software environment; an antidetect browser focuses on browser characteristics visible to websites. None guarantees that accounts or activity will remain unlinked.

- Browser storage: Separate profiles for distinct bookmarks, passwords, extensions, settings, history, cookies and logins. Use containers when the main need is to keep particular sites’ cookies, logins and site data apart within one profile.
- Operating-system environment: Choose a VM if authorized work or testing requires a separate OS and software setup.
- Browser identity signals: Mainstream browser privacy protections have documented scopes. Do not treat an antidetect product’s fingerprint controls as proof that a website cannot recognize it.
Use only accounts you are authorized to manage, and follow the applicable platform and employer rules. These tools should not be treated as ways to defeat anti-fraud enforcement.

Browser profiles and containers
Mozilla says Firefox profiles can keep bookmarks, passwords, settings, add-ons, history, cookies and logins separate. Profiles are local by default and do not automatically sync or sign you in. Mozilla’s Multi-Account Containers separate cookies, logins and site data within one profile; profiles provide broader separation of browser data. Firefox’s newer profile-management interface is rolling out gradually, so controls can differ by version and platform. See Mozilla’s profile documentation for current guidance.
#1 Best Overall
In managed Chrome environments, Google documents policies that can suggest or enforce a separate browser profile when a managed account is added. The behavior depends on configuration and supported platform; it does not change the underlying device or network identity. Details are in Chrome Enterprise policy documentation.
Virtual machines
A VM runs a virtualized environment on a host system. It can give authorized testing or compartmentalized work a separate OS and software environment. It does not, by itself, change the network connection, account identity or every identifying signal a site can observe.

A 2020 research paper comparing browsing approaches describes its VM-based environment as using more system resources than a simple browser extension or modified browser. That is a finding about the comparison studied, not a universal current performance figure or a minimum hardware specification. The paper is available at USENIX Security 2020.

Antidetect browsers
Antidetect browsers aim to manage or change browser characteristics visible to websites. A peer-reviewed 2020 paper evaluated four anti-fingerprinting tools and reported that small differences between simulated and real fingerprints could reveal the tools it tested. It also discusses trade-offs among fingerprint-modification approaches. Those findings concern historical versions of the evaluated tools, not every current commercial product; they are not a current vendor comparison.

Comparison at a glance
| Option | What it separates | Best fit | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser profiles or containers | Profiles separate broader browser data; containers separate site cookies, logins and data within a profile. | Routine personal or work separation and multiple authorized logins. | No operating-system boundary or guarantee against fingerprint-based correlation. |
| Virtual machine | A virtualized OS and software environment on the host. | Repeatable testing or work that requires a distinct OS environment. | Uses host resources and adds setup; does not ensure a different network or identity. |
| Antidetect browser | Browser profile and identity-signal management, depending on the product. | Specialized browser identity management where the product’s behavior has been independently assessed. | No guarantee of undetectability or non-linkability; current cross-product measurements are not established here. |
Why separate accounts can still be correlated
Cookies are only one source of information. Mozilla explains that browser fingerprinting combines details such as time zone, operating-system settings, fonts, graphics behavior and hardware properties to create a recognizable fingerprint. Fingerprinting can continue across sessions even when cookies are blocked or private browsing is used. A clean profile or separate VM therefore does not guarantee that a platform cannot associate activity through other signals or account information.
Private browsing is not a fresh identity: it does not erase all the characteristics a site may use to recognize a browser. Likewise, a VM supplies an OS-level environment, not automatic anonymity.

Mozilla wrote in November 2025 that its research showed Firefox’s fingerprinting improvements “cut the percentage of users seen as unique by almost half.” That statistic describes Mozilla’s research on its protections; it is not a comparative test of VMs and antidetect browsers. Do not confuse site isolation with account separation
Google describes Chrome site isolation as separating pages from different websites into different processes to make data theft harder. This is a browser security measure, not a separate account identity or a substitute for a VM when an OS-level boundary is required. Google’s wording is in its Chrome Enterprise site isolation documentation.

Practical decision
- Separate browser data: Create separate standard profiles. If only selected sites’ data needs separation within one profile, use containers where available.
- Need a distinct OS or repeatable configuration: Use a VM, accounting for setup and host-resource demands. A VM is not automatically a new network identity.
- Considering an antidetect product: Assess its claims and intended use carefully. Browser fingerprint controls do not establish that sites cannot detect or correlate it.
- Keep account use authorized: Follow platform and workplace requirements rather than treating separation tools as a way around enforcement.
If you choose the VM route and your existing computer cannot handle the workload, look for a laptop for running virtual machines based on the specific OS and test setup you plan to use. The cited comparison provides no buying specification, and not every reader needs new hardware.
