Mike Hayden, a Republican, has endorsed Democrat Adam Hamilton in his challenge to Republican Sen. Roger Marshall. Hayden said he backed Hamilton because Kansas needs a senator who will fight for the state’s needs. The endorsement makes Hayden the second former Republican Kansas governor reported to support Hamilton.
Who endorsed Adam Hamilton?
Mike Hayden, who served as Kansas governor from 1987 to 1991, endorsed Hamilton in an op-ed published in The Wichita Eagle, according to an October 2, 2026 report by The Hill republished by AOL. The report identifies Hamilton as the Democrat challenging incumbent Republican Roger Marshall for the U.S. Senate seat.

Why did Hayden back Hamilton?
Hayden connected his endorsement to the reason he first sought public office: he believed his community’s representative was not fighting for Kansas. As quoted in the report, he said: “I ran for office for the first time when I was only 28 years old because I felt the person representing my community in the legislature was failing to fight for the needs of our state. Today, I am endorsing Adam Hamilton for the U.S. Senate for the same reasons.”

The report also says Hayden believes Hamilton will press for relief and practical solutions and listen to constituents. Those are Hayden’s assessments, not independently established evidence of Hamilton’s record or positions.

Which former Kansas governors support Hamilton?
Hayden is the second former Republican Kansas governor reported to endorse Hamilton. Bill Graves had backed Hamilton the previous month, according to the report. Graves criticized Marshall as having “turned his back” on Kansas and said Hamilton knows how to “disagree without being disagreeable.” Those phrases describe Graves’s view; they are not independent findings about either candidate.
Is the Kansas Senate race competitive?
The report presents two different indicators without enough underlying detail to determine which better reflects the race. Decision Desk HQ predicted Marshall was likely to win, while an Emerson College poll in September placed Hamilton within the margin of error. The report does not give the poll’s percentages, field dates, sample size or margin-of-error figure, nor a numerical probability for the forecast. The poll description therefore does not establish a statistically meaningful Hamilton lead, and the forecast is not proof of the eventual result.
Rank #2
The report characterizes Kansas as deep red and says the seat has not been held by a Democrat for nearly a century. Those are broad contextual descriptions, rather than a detailed account of the state’s election history.
