Recognized revenue records the value of goods or services a company has delivered during a reporting period under the applicable accounting rules. Annualized revenue projects a current revenue pace across a year. The two figures answer different questions: one measures performance already delivered; the other describes a run rate based on a stated date and assumptions.
What recognized revenue measures
Under U.S. GAAP’s ASC 606, a company recognizes revenue as it satisfies promises to provide goods or services to a customer. The standard applies a five-step model: identify the contract and its performance obligations, determine the transaction price, allocate it to those obligations, and recognize revenue when or as each obligation is satisfied. The amount reflects the consideration the company expects in exchange for transferring the promised goods or services. FASB’s ASC 606 materials provide the U.S. framework; Australia’s AASB 15 sets out the corresponding Australian standard.

Recognized revenue is therefore tied to the reporting period and to delivery—not simply to when the customer signs, receives an invoice, or pays. A contract may require a company to provide service over time, deliver a product at a point in time, or meet several distinct obligations. The contract terms and the applicable accounting framework determine when each amount is recognized.

What annualized revenue measures
Annualized revenue is a run-rate estimate: a current pace of revenue is extrapolated to an annual amount. In subscription businesses, a company may annualize its recurring contracts, but the label is not governed by a single universal definition. Companies may include different contract types or components and use different measurement dates and assumptions.

ARR, or annual recurring revenue, is one company-defined operating metric often used for subscription businesses. It should not automatically be treated as revenue recognized under GAAP or IFRS. For example, one SEC-filed issuer disclosure states that its ARR is not calculated from recognized or unearned revenue. That is an example of a particular issuer’s definition, not a rule that applies to all companies.
How the figures differ

Because the figures have different bases, a larger annualized figure does not by itself mean a company has already earned that amount during a year. Nor does recognized revenue necessarily show the full current scale of a recurring business if contracts have recently started or expanded.

Why billing, cash, and revenue can differ
A company may invoice or collect cash before it has provided all the contracted service. The portion not yet recognized may be reported as deferred revenue or a contract liability, depending on the circumstances and the company’s accounting presentation. Conversely, recognizing revenue in a period does not mean the company collected the same amount of cash in that period.

A conditional subscription example
Suppose a customer signs a one-year subscription for $12,000 and the service is delivered evenly throughout the year. Under those assumptions, the company might recognize $1,000 per month as it provides the service, while describing the subscription as a $12,000 annualized pace. This is illustrative arithmetic, not a universal accounting conclusion: the contract’s promises, delivery pattern, and applicable standard determine the recognition schedule.

- Match the time basis: Identify the recognized-revenue reporting period and the annualized metric’s measurement date. A period result and a point-in-time run rate are not directly interchangeable.
- Check the revenue mix: Find out whether the run rate includes only recurring subscriptions or also setup fees, one-time sales, usage charges, or services.
- Read the contract assumptions: Look for how the company treats service start dates, contract terms, renewals, churn, cancellations, and price changes.
- Read the issuer’s definition: Confirm which contracts and components count, how the annualization works, and whether the methodology has changed. Company disclosures can define ARR differently; for a filed example, see this SEC filing.
- Confirm the accounting framework: Determine whether the financial statements use U.S. GAAP ASC 606, IFRS 15, or a local equivalent, and consider any relevant scope exceptions. For a specific company, consult its latest financial statements and accounting policies.
For a specific contract, the accounting answer depends on its facts and governing standard; the general example here is not accounting advice.
