Check your iPhone’s used and available capacity at Settings > General > iPhone Storage, then compare the amount in use with the capacity of your new phone. If your current data fits, you do not need to delete anything just to transfer it. If it will not fit, make room carefully—and make a backup before removing anything important.
Check how much space your iPhone is using

Compare the current phone’s used space with the storage capacity of the phone you plan to get. If the data in use fits, Apple says you do not need to remove content for the transfer. If it does not fit, you may need to optimize or remove content before moving to the smaller-capacity device.

These figures describe storage on the iPhone itself, not iCloud. iCloud storage is separate and supports services such as backups and photo or file syncing. Apple says a new iCloud account includes 5 GB of storage; freeing iCloud space does not increase the iPhone’s physical capacity. Apple’s iCloud storage guidance explains the distinction.

Free space without losing something you need
First make a backup or another safe copy of anything you cannot replace. Deleting a file that syncs through iCloud can remove it from iCloud and other devices too, so verify what is synced before you delete it.
Photos and videos
If you use iCloud Photos and have enough iCloud capacity, turn on Optimize iPhone Storage to keep full-resolution originals in iCloud and smaller, space-saving versions on the phone when needed. This depends on iCloud and is not a separate backup. For a move to a lower-capacity phone, Apple also describes importing photos and videos to a computer before deleting them from the camera roll.

Review large attachments and conversations you no longer need. Save anything important before deleting it. If Messages content is synced with iCloud, deleting it may also remove it from iCloud and your other synced devices; Apple explains how iCloud storage and synced content work.

Offline videos and files
Remove downloaded TV or streaming videos you have already watched, and delete documents in Files that you no longer need. Check whether a file is stored only on the phone or synced to a cloud service before removing it.
Apps you rarely use
You can delete an app you no longer need. Alternatively, enable Offload Unused Apps in iPhone Storage if the option is available: iPhone removes an unused app but keeps its documents and data. Its icon remains on the Home Screen or App Library, and you can tap it to reinstall the app.

A cleanup is not a backup. Apple lists Quick Start, restoring from iCloud, and a computer backup as ways to move data. Choose based on your available Wi-Fi, computer access, iCloud capacity, and whether you can keep both phones nearby during setup.

Check whether temporary iCloud storage is available
If you are buying a new iPhone or iPad and do not have enough iCloud storage for a backup of your current device, Apple may offer temporary iCloud storage for the transfer. Apple’s stated eligibility requires a new-device purchase and insufficient iCloud capacity for the current device backup; update the old device and make sure you know the Apple Account credentials.
Apple says to restore the temporary backup within 21 days. Do not erase the old phone until you have restored the backup. After the restore, the temporary backup remains available for 7 days before deletion. Confirm the current requirements and deadlines on Apple’s temporary iCloud storage page.
