Anker SOLIX Solarbank 4, for example, is a home battery system that Anker says must currently be installed by a registered qualified electrician on a dedicated hardwired circuit.
What counts as plug-in solar in Great Britain?
The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) interim product specification defines a plug-in solar device as a domestic, single-phase product with maximum apparent power of 800VA. Its specified kit includes at least one photovoltaic (PV) module, a grid-following microinverter, a connection lead fitted with a BS 1363 plug, and a mounting system. It is intended to connect using the manufacturer-supplied plug. The specification allows one plug-in solar product per household. Read the GB Plug-in Solar Device Interim Product Specification.

This is a defined route for compliant solar-only equipment—not a blanket permission for any inverter, balcony panel or product advertised as plug-in. DESNZ says only devices compliant with the interim product specification can be sold and plugged in under the relevant amendment to the Plugs and Sockets etc. (Safety) Regulations 1994. The government’s consultation outcome says it intends to proceed with the proposed amendments and specification, with refinements, and to issue consumer guidance alongside the regulations’ commencement. See the consultation outcome.
The specification concerns Great Britain. It says G98 applies there; Northern Ireland has separate requirements under G98/NI, and whether the specification will apply there remains under consideration. Do not assume that the Great Britain socket route automatically covers Northern Ireland.

Does the socket route include a battery?
No. The interim specification expressly excludes plug-in battery systems and PV devices integrated with battery systems. A battery does not become eligible simply because a system can physically be connected to a socket or is marketed as balcony solar. The government consultation outcome likewise makes clear that the specification applies to plug-in solar, not plug-in batteries.
That boundary matters when choosing equipment: a compliant solar-only kit may use the defined socket route, while a solar-plus-storage system has a different installation path. Check the product’s current compliance evidence and instructions rather than relying on its plug, connector or marketing description.

Anker states that Solarbank 4 currently must be installed by a registered qualified electrician on a dedicated hardwired circuit. Although the manufacturer says the hardware is designed to support a plug-in connection, that method is not currently permitted. Because the government’s interim socket route excludes battery-integrated PV, Solarbank 4 is not a compliant plug-in solar kit under that route.

Check Anker’s current documentation for compatibility and installation details before choosing accessories.
How to assess a solar-only kit before buying
- Confirm the product falls within the specification. Check that the complete device is a solar-only, single-phase product within the 800VA maximum apparent-power limit, and that the seller provides current evidence of compliance with the interim product specification.
- Check the supplied connection and components. The specified kit includes a PV module, grid-following microinverter, manufacturer-supplied lead fitted with a BS 1363 plug, and mounting system. Do not assume that a loose panel or a different inverter-and-cable combination qualifies.
- Review the mounting instructions and your property. The specification includes a mounting system, but that does not establish that every roof, balcony, garden or façade is suitable. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and check that the proposed location and fixings are appropriate for your property.
- Check geography and household limits. The specification states one plug-in solar product per household in Great Britain. Northern Ireland has separate requirements, and the specification’s application there has not been settled.
- Match generation to when you use electricity. A solar-only system supplies generation when it is available; it does not provide battery storage. Consider your daytime electricity use and tariff, but do not rely on a promised payback or savings figure unless it is based on your own circumstances and a transparent calculation.
What safety evidence says—and does not say
DESNZ’s electrical safety study, published 16 June 2026, found that representative plug-in PV devices operated safely under the tested conditions. The government summary reports stable behaviour, effective protective-device operation, and no evidence of sustained unsafe energisation or unacceptable thermal effects. It also reports variation in export-limitation behaviour and electromagnetic compatibility, and says a UK-specific product specification would be beneficial. Read the electrical safety study.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Those findings apply to representative equipment in defined tests; they are not a guarantee that every product or home circuit is safe. The specification and product instructions still matter, and a buyer should not treat the study as approval of a particular unverified kit.

Choosing between solar-only plug-in and battery storage
The practical choice is not simply between two ways to plug in. The interim socket route is for compliant solar-only devices; Solarbank 4 is a battery-integrated system with a hardwired installation requirement. Compare what each option can do, and what the available evidence actually establishes:
| Consideration | Compliant solar-only plug-in kit | Anker SOLIX Solarbank 4 E5000 Pro |
|---|---|---|
| Socket-route eligibility | Eligible only if it meets the interim product specification; maximum 800VA apparent power and one product per household in Great Britain (DESNZ specification). | Not eligible under the solar-only socket route because it is battery-integrated (DESNZ specification). |
| Storage and power figures | Not stated in the specification as a general kit value; check the specific product’s documentation. | 5,024Wh rated energy, 5,000W maximum PV input, four MPPTs and 2,500W single-device rated power, as listed by Anker. |
| Installation route | Intended to connect with the manufacturer-supplied BS 1363 plug, if the product is compliant. | Anker says a registered qualified electrician must install it on a dedicated hardwired circuit; its plug-in connection is not currently permitted. |
| Mounting and property fit | Mounting system is part of the specified kit; suitability depends on the product instructions and property. | Check Anker’s current installation documentation and have the required qualified electrician assess the installation. |
| Monitoring and export control | Features vary by product; verify them in the specific kit’s documentation. | Anker says a compatible smart meter provides household load monitoring and anti-backflow functionality; without one, those functions are not supported. |
| Savings and installation costs | No verified household savings estimate or installation cost is established by the cited sources. | No comparable annual savings estimate or installation cost is established by the cited sources. |
For either route, estimates depend on the home, installation, electricity use and tariff. The cited sources do not establish a general annual saving or payback period, so treat such claims cautiously unless their assumptions are clear and relevant to your household.
