No: the available evidence does not show that smart glasses record every movement or use every image and voice interaction to train AI. It does show two distinct camera uses—saving photos and videos for the wearer, and sending an image with a spoken prompt for AI interpretation—with different indicators and data-handling descriptions.
What happens when smart glasses use a camera?
Meta’s materials describe two different camera flows for Ray-Ban Meta glasses. Treating both as “the glasses upload everything” obscures what is actually documented.

Gallery photos and videos
When the wearer takes a gallery photo or video, Meta says it stays on the glasses until the wearer imports it to a phone. After import, it is stored in the phone’s gallery. Sharing it with another service follows that service’s usual sharing context. Meta describes the gallery media as visible to “You, and only you — unless you choose to share them.” That statement concerns this capture-and-sharing flow, not every kind of AI processing.
Camera-based AI prompts
When a wearer asks an AI question about what the glasses see, Meta’s multimodal system card describes the captured image and text produced from the wearer’s spoken words being passed to the AI model for interpretation. That is a request-specific image-and-text flow; it is not evidence that the glasses continuously send everything in view.

The Ray-Ban US FAQ says photos and videos used for AI features are not saved in Meta AI conversation history. It also says data is used to provide the requested feature and, in protected form, to improve products. “Not saved in conversation history” does not mean “never processed,” and “improve products” does not establish that every prompt image trains a foundation model.
Does every image or voice command train the AI?
No source cited here establishes that every camera image or voice command is used to train a model. Meta’s system card describes training as drawing on multiple sources, including public information online, licensed information, and information from Meta products and services. That broad description does not show that each real-time image sent for an answer is retained or used as training data.
Three activities are worth keeping separate:
- Providing a feature: processing the image and spoken prompt to answer a camera-based question.
- Improving products: the Ray-Ban US FAQ says data may be used in protected form for this purpose.
- Training models: Meta describes several training sources, but the available descriptions do not specify that every glasses interaction becomes training data.
Meta’s September 23, 2026 engineering post describes “Private Processing,” a confidential-computing approach for certain AI workloads. Meta says those workloads run inside confidential virtual machines, with protected memory that cannot be read from outside the environment, including by Meta. This is Meta’s technical description; the cited materials do not independently verify which features or regions use it, or that it covers every data flow.

Not necessarily. The LED behavior depends on the model and camera function. Meta says the front capture LED blinks during gallery photo and video capture: briefly for a photo and continuously while recording video. Meta also says the capture LED has no off switch and that the glasses prevent capture if the light is covered.

The Ray-Ban US FAQ makes a separate distinction for AI camera use: newer models may use the camera for an AI question without activating the LED, while first-generation glasses illuminate it for some AI features because of hardware limitations. So the gallery-capture light is not a reliable signal that every camera-based AI operation is happening. Check the guidance for the exact model and feature rather than assuming one indicator rule applies to all glasses.
What can a wearer delete, and what does deletion change?
Meta’s responsible-innovation page says users can delete voice recordings and that deleted information will not be used for future model training. Meta also cautions that removing information does not instantly alter a model that learned from it earlier: “If you delete a piece of information a model learned from, the model won’t change in that moment.”
The Ray-Ban US FAQ points users to an activity log for voice activity and says it can be downloaded. These controls are useful, but the cited pages do not establish one universal deletion or retention schedule for every data category. Nor does deleting a voice recording establish that all earlier processing or any other copy of related data has been undone.

How can people nearby protect their privacy?
Meta’s responsible-innovation guidance says: “If you want to capture a photo or video, make sure that you ask for permission from those around you.” It also advises avoiding sensitive places or locations where people reasonably expect privacy. Meta’s guidance, as quoted by the Associated Press, adds: “Respect people’s preferences. Not everyone loves being photographed. Stop recording if anyone expresses that they would rather you not.”

Those recommendations matter because an indicator cannot answer every question a bystander may have—especially when an AI camera prompt may not activate the LED on newer models. In practice:
- Ask before taking a photo or video, and stop if someone objects.
- Leave camera-enabled glasses off or avoid using them in private or sensitive settings.
- Do not assume a dark indicator proves the camera is never being used; behavior varies by model and feature.
- Check current device and account controls if you wear the glasses, including the activity log and available deletion options.
Are smart glasses being banned?
The Associated Press reported on October 5, 2026, that a Dutch eyewear retailer had suspended sales amid public debate and that the UK Cinema Association was introducing policies to prohibit or restrict camera-enabled smart glasses over privacy and film-piracy concerns. These are reported retailer and venue responses, not a universal ban.
In a separate report dated October 1, 2026, the Associated Press said California Governor Gavin Newsom vetoed a proposed bill that would have penalized secret recording in private spaces and required indicators on covered wearable devices beginning in 2028. The proposal did not become law. The same report described California as one of roughly a dozen states requiring both parties’ consent to record a conversation; that is not a complete state-by-state legal survey. Recording laws vary, so check current rules in your jurisdiction rather than treating this summary as legal advice.
