Animal Crossing: New Horizons is listed at 10.6 GB for Nintendo Switch and 10.8 GB for Nintendo Switch 2. Those are Nintendo’s published game file sizes, not a guarantee of the full space the game will occupy after updates, save data, or optional content. Check your console’s available storage before downloading.
How many GB is Animal Crossing: New Horizons?
Nintendo’s US product listings show the following sizes, accessed October 7, 2026:

- Nintendo Switch, including Switch Lite and Switch OLED Model: 10.6 GB.
- Nintendo Switch 2: 10.8 GB.
The Switch 2 listing is for the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition. Its listed file size is 0.2 GB larger than the Switch listing, but Nintendo does not provide a combined post-update installation figure. Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch listing and Nintendo’s Switch 2 Edition listing give the platform-specific figures.

The file size is only useful when compared with the free space on your console. Nintendo’s stated internal capacities are not all available for games and downloads because system storage uses some space. The capacity figures below are from Nintendo Support Japan; the game sizes are from Nintendo’s US listings.

Nintendo notes that usable capacity is lower than the stated internal capacity because system storage is excluded. The space left for this game therefore depends on system data and what else is installed. Nintendo Support’s storage guidance explains the listed capacities and storage expansion.
What if your console does not have enough free space?
Nintendo says storage can be expanded with a microSD card. Check the card type compatible with your specific console model before buying; compatibility details can differ, and the support page does not provide every model-specific card-format detail.

- Check the console’s available storage in its system settings.
- If there is not enough space, review whether you can archive or delete other downloaded software or data.
- If you need more room, confirm the compatible microSD card type for your console using Nintendo’s support guidance before purchasing.
Do updates or the Switch 2 Edition change the size?
Updates
Nintendo Support lists version 3.0.3 as released on April 29, 2026, and says players should update while connected to the internet. Nintendo states: “This update must be applied in order to use the game’s Internet features.” Players also need the same software version to play together. Nintendo Support’s update article includes the version and online-play requirements.

Nintendo does not state the update’s download size, a precise temporary free-space requirement, or the total footprint after updating. The published 10.6 GB and 10.8 GB figures should not be treated as confirmed totals for every installation.

Switch 2 Edition
Nintendo describes the Switch 2 Edition as adding enhanced resolution, mouse-control support, and a megaphone that uses the system microphone. It also lists online sessions for up to 12 players when everyone has that edition. The standard Switch listing describes online play and local wireless for up to eight players. These are edition and platform differences; they do not establish a different post-update storage total. Nintendo’s Switch 2 Edition listing and standard Switch listing detail the features.
Does Happy Home Paradise add to the download?
Happy Home Paradise is optional downloadable content, and Nintendo does not state its file size on the reviewed support page. It requires the full base game. Nintendo offers access either through a separate purchase or through an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Separately purchased DLC remains playable; access through the membership lasts only while the qualifying membership is active. Will moving your island to another console affect the game size?
Island transfer and backup concern save data, not the published game download size. Nintendo documents ways to transfer an entire island, move an individual resident, or restore island data. To restore an island backup on a replacement console, island backup must have been enabled on the original system beforehand. See Nintendo Support’s island transfer and backup instructions.
