Are AirPods 4 good for calls?
Apple lists dual beamforming microphones, an inward-facing microphone, the H2 chip, and Voice Isolation for AirPods 4. The ANC version adds active noise cancellation and has a wireless charging case. These specifications describe features, not a numeric measure of how clearly callers will hear you.

RTINGS’ independent review describes the AirPods 4 ANC microphone as “alright”: its recording was understandable, but could sound boxy and thin. That result comes from one reviewer’s testing and should not be treated as a guarantee across different voices, rooms, devices, or software.
Do AirPods block background noise on calls?
There are two different kinds of noise handling to consider. Active noise cancellation helps reduce sound reaching the wearer; Voice Isolation is intended to improve what the other person hears from your voice. ANC on the earbuds does not, by itself, establish how much background noise a caller will hear.

Apple says that when AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 2, or AirPods Pro 3 are used during calls on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, Voice Isolation can enhance voice quality and remove background noise such as wind for the listener. Apple does not publish a standardized numeric AirPods call-quality or microphone score in the official product, specification, and support materials reviewed. There is therefore no official number to use to rank these models. Microphone performance should be judged from relevant independent recordings and real-world fit for your calls, not from an invented score or the earbuds’ playback specifications.

Before choosing, weigh the actual seller and price, open-fit versus silicone-tip fit, whether you need ANC or transparency, compatibility with Apple devices and software for Voice Isolation, and microphone recordings from settings like the ones where you take calls. Consider battery and case features if they matter to your workday, but do not treat playback battery ratings as call-runtime measurements.
