Angular NG0503: How to Fix Unsupported Projection of DOM Nodes

Angular NG0503 occurs when native DOM-created nodes are supplied as projected content during hydration. Replace them with Angular-managed content, or use ngSkipHydration on the affected component host as a scoped workaround.

Angular NG0503 means server-side rendering encountered DOM nodes created outside Angular and passed to a component as projected content. The preferred fix is to create that content through Angular APIs. If you cannot refactor the component yet, add ngSkipHydration to its host as a temporary workaround; Angular will skip hydration for that component and its children and re-render them.

What triggers Angular NG0503?

Hydration reuses server-rendered DOM in the browser, so Angular expects the client-side view structure to correspond to the server-rendered structure. NG0503 is a specific unsupported projection case: during server-side serialization, Angular encounters nodes created outside Angular’s context and supplied as projectable nodes.

A representative trigger is creating elements with browser APIs such as document.createElement and passing those native nodes in the projectableNodes option when creating a component whose template contains <ng-content>. Angular identifies createComponent and ViewContainerRef.createComponent as APIs to inspect; using either API is not inherently the problem. The issue is passing native DOM-created nodes as projected content. See Angular’s NG0503 error reference.

How to find the source

  1. Read the console error and locate the portion of the application DOM it identifies.
  2. Trace the component that constructs the projectable-node array and check for nodes made with document.createElement, other native DOM APIs, or an external library that manipulates the DOM.
  3. Check whether those nodes are passed to createComponent or ViewContainerRef.createComponent and rendered through an <ng-content> slot.

Angular recommends reviewing the reported location for hydration-related problems such as direct DOM manipulation. Its content projection guide explains how projected content is handled through <ng-content>.

Preferred fix: create projected content with Angular APIs

Replace native-created projectable nodes with content created and managed through Angular. Angular’s programmatic rendering guide demonstrates a projection pattern using the rootNodes of an Angular-created embedded view. Adapt the pattern to the component and view lifecycle that own the content; the goal is to keep the projected nodes within Angular’s view model rather than handing projection native nodes created outside it.

Temporary workaround: skip hydration for the component

If you cannot make the component hydration-compatible immediately, add ngSkipHydration to that component’s host element. Angular requires this attribute on a component host, not an arbitrary element. It skips hydration for the component and its descendants; they are destroyed and re-rendered as though hydration were disabled for that subtree. This can isolate incompatible behavior, but the subtree gives up hydration’s reuse of server-rendered DOM. Avoid putting the attribute on the root application component unless skipping hydration for the whole application is intentional. See Angular’s hydration guide.

Which remedy should you choose?

Approach What changes Scope and tradeoff
Use Angular APIs for projected content Replace native-created projectable nodes with Angular-created content, such as nodes from an Angular view. Addresses the unsupported construction while preserving hydration compatibility. Adapt ownership and lifecycle to the application.
Apply ngSkipHydration to the component host Tell Angular to skip hydration for that component. Applies to the component and its children; they are re-rendered and do not receive hydration’s benefits.

Angular’s programmatic rendering guide states: “Hydration does not support projecting DOM nodes created with native DOM APIs.”
