Andy Tran’s pick for LBB’s “My Most Immortal Ad” series is PlayStation’s “Mental Wealth,” a 1999 commercial directed by Chris Cunningham. Tran argues that its enduring force comes from the idea, not from whether viewers can identify the tools used to make it. That is his creative opinion, not a conclusion supported by audience-response research.
What is PlayStation’s “Mental Wealth” ad?
“Mental Wealth” is a 40-second PlayStation commercial whose uncanny imagery made it a distinctive entry in the brand’s European television advertising. PlayStation’s retrospective dates the spot to 1999 and places it in that European TV-ad history: PlayStation’s retrospective of European television adverts.

The History of Advertising Trust catalogues the commercial as dating from 1999–2000. Its record describes it as a colour spot with a duration of 00:00:40. The date range is the catalogue’s metadata; PlayStation’s own retrospective uses the year 1999.

In LBB’s 9 October 2026 feature, Tran—identified as executive creative director and creative lead marketing at Commerzbank—selects “Mental Wealth” for the series, which asks advertising jurors to name work they believe has stood the test of time. He uses the ad’s uncanny image to make a broader point about creative judgment: viewers can become preoccupied with whether a piece was made with CGI or AI instead of considering the idea it conveys.

Tran puts that view succinctly: “The idea won. Everything else is just noise.” He also writes, “Stop auditing the tools; start worshiping the canvas.” Both are Tran’s arguments about how to look at creative work—not measured findings about what audiences think of CGI, AI, or this particular ad. His feature cites no study or market statistic establishing a change in public attitudes.
Who made the commercial?
The History of Advertising Trust catalogue credits Chris Cunningham as director, Trevor Beattie as copywriter, TBWA GGT Simons Palmer as agency, RSA Films as production company, and Sony PlayStation as client. The British Arrows archive gives the agency name as TBWA GGT Simon Palmer; the spelling differs between the two archive records.

What awards did “Mental Wealth” receive?
The History of Advertising Trust record notes a 2000 British Arrows Bronze award. The British Arrows archive records these campaign awards and production credits:
- Gold for computer animation
- Gold for video post-production
- Bronze for European advertising
- Bronze for computer hardware
The award categories and campaign credits are listed in the British Arrows 2000 archive. The award categories make a useful counterpoint to Tran’s emphasis on the idea: the archival record documents recognition for both craft and the campaign, while Tran’s selection explains why he believes the work remains memorable.

What the record establishes—and what it does not
The sources establish the ad’s historical dating, duration, production credits, and British Arrows recognition. Tran’s essay offers a point of view on why the work lasts. It does not establish how audiences responded at the time, how they view the ad now, or whether people have become more focused on CGI and AI than on ideas.
