To address the issues covered by Google’s October 2026 Android Security Bulletin, a device needs a security patch level of 2026-10-01 or later. Check the security patch level shown in your device’s Settings; the bulletin’s publication does not mean the update has reached every Android phone or tablet.
What Google’s October 2026 bulletin covers
Google published its Android Security Bulletin for October 2026 on October 5, 2026. Its Framework and System tables contain 25 vulnerability entries: seven in Framework and 18 in System. The entries identify CVEs, vulnerability types, severity ratings and, where applicable, updated Android Open Source Project (AOSP) versions.

The bulletin’s overall most severe issue is a critical vulnerability in System that could allow local elevation of privilege without additional execution privileges or user interaction. Framework has a separate critical issue: its most severe listed vulnerability could cause remote denial of service, also without additional execution privileges or user interaction. These are distinct findings, not two descriptions of the same issue.
How to check whether your device has the October patch
- Open your device’s Settings and find the Android security update or security patch level. The exact menu wording and location can differ by manufacturer and Android version.
- Read the security patch level. A level of
2026-10-01or later meets Google’s stated threshold for the issues associated with that patch level. - If the level is earlier, check for updates in the device’s system or software update screen. Follow your manufacturer’s instructions if an update is available.
- Check again after installation. Confirm the displayed security patch level has advanced; a notice that an update was downloaded or installed is not itself the patch-level value.
Google says manufacturers including these updates should set the patch string to 2026-10-01. Some devices running Android 10 or later may also receive security updates through Google Play system updates. A Play system update and the security patch level shown in Settings are related update channels, but do not assume one display automatically proves the other has changed; check the device’s update information and manufacturer guidance.

What the Android-wide bulletin does—and does not—tell you
The bulletin defines platform-level issues associated with a patch level. It does not give a universal rollout date or confirm that a particular model has received the update. Manufacturers control device-specific availability, so two devices running Android may show different patch levels at the same time. Check the update screen and support information for your specific model.
Nor is the Android-wide bulletin a complete inventory of every issue that could affect a particular device. Google says public Android bulletin vulnerabilities are required for declaring a patch level, while additional device or partner vulnerabilities are not. Manufacturers and chipset makers may publish separate product-specific security bulletins.

Google’s severity summary assumes platform and service mitigations are disabled for development purposes or successfully bypassed. The bulletin does not provide an aggregate count of affected devices, a confirmed-exploitation count, or a device-by-device status list. Its severity ratings describe the listed vulnerabilities under the stated assumption; they are not evidence that a particular device has been attacked.

Google also says it notifies Android partners about issues at least a month before publication. That advance notice supports partner preparation, but it is not a promise that every manufacturer will release an update on publication day.
