As fusion in its core changes, gravity reshapes the star; what happens next depends mainly on its mass. A Sun-like star swells into a red giant and eventually leaves a cooling white dwarf. A sufficiently massive star can collapse and explode as a supernova, leaving a neutron star or black hole.
What “running out of fuel” means
During the main sequence, nuclear reactions in a star’s core release heat and pressure that counteract gravity. “Running out of fuel” usually means the core is running low on the material needed for its current fusion stage—not that every reaction throughout the star stops at once. The core can contract and heat up, while fusion continues in surrounding layers or a later stage begins. NASA describes a star’s life as “a constant struggle against the force of gravity.” (NASA: Star Lifecycle)

How the endings compare
| Starting star or event | What happens as fuel runs low | Likely outcome |
|---|---|---|
| Sun-like or lower-mass star | Expands into a giant and sheds its outer layers. | A hot white dwarf remains and gradually cools; this is not the ordinary core-collapse supernova path. (NASA: Stars; NASA: Ask an Astrophysicist) |
| Sufficiently massive star | Can fuse progressively heavier elements; when an iron core forms, collapse can trigger an explosion. | A core-collapse supernova ejects material, leaving a neutron star or, if the remnant is sufficiently massive, a black hole. (NASA: Stars; NASA: Black Holes) |
| White dwarf in a binary system | Gains matter from a companion or collides with another white dwarf. | Can be disrupted in a thermonuclear supernova—a distinct mechanism from massive-star core collapse. (NASA: Stars; NASA: Ask an Astrophysicist) |
What happens to a Sun-like star
It expands into a red giant
When the Sun’s core hydrogen becomes depleted, the star’s internal structure changes. It expands into a red giant rather than immediately exploding. NASA’s educational material estimates that the Sun has about five billion years before the red-giant change; that is an approximate timescale, not a precise countdown. (NASA: Ask an Astrophysicist)

It sheds its outer layers and leaves a white dwarf
Later, the star loses its outer gas. That expanding material can glow, while the hot, dense core left behind becomes a white dwarf. The white dwarf no longer sustains the fusion that powered the earlier star and cools over time. An isolated Sun-like star does not normally end in a core-collapse supernova.

What happens to a massive star
Fusion proceeds through heavier elements
A sufficiently massive star can continue through later fusion stages, building layers of heavier elements. In the most massive stars, this sequence can reach silicon and iron. NASA says that by the silicon-to-iron stage, the star can use up its fuel in a matter of days; this describes a late stage, not the star’s total lifetime. (NASA: Stars)
An iron core collapses
Iron fusion does not provide energy to support the core. When the iron core can no longer resist gravity, it collapses; in a sufficiently massive star, that collapse can trigger a core-collapse supernova. The explosion throws stellar material into space, where it can contribute to future stars, planets and other objects. The remaining core may become a neutron star or a black hole, depending on the collapse and the remnant’s mass. (NASA: Stars; NASA: Black Holes)

Why mass matters—and why there is no universal cutoff
Initial stellar mass is a useful guide to a star’s broad path, but it does not establish one exact dividing line that predicts every remnant. NASA’s black-hole overview uses more than eight times the Sun’s mass as an educational rule of thumb for stars that can undergo core collapse and supernova. Its remnant ranges are approximate, and the mass of the collapsing core matters too. Do not read that figure as a universal boundary between neutron stars and black holes. (NASA: Black Holes; NASA: Stars)

Not every supernova is a star’s core-collapse death
A core-collapse supernova is the endpoint of a sufficiently massive star. A thermonuclear supernova follows a different route: a white dwarf in a binary system can gain matter from a companion or collide with another white dwarf. So a supernova does not always mean that a massive star’s iron core has collapsed. (NASA: Stars; NASA: Ask an Astrophysicist)
