The setting behind the headline is Android’s cached apps freezer. On supported builds it appears in Developer options as Suspend execution for cached apps. It stops background processes that Android has already marked as cached from using the CPU, while keeping them in memory. Android’s own documentation describes this as a source of “significant battery savings,” but it does not publish a battery-life percentage for the feature. Any one-week difference on a single phone is therefore a personal observation, and it only means something if the conditions behind it are known.
What the freezer actually does
Android keeps recently used apps in memory so they can reopen quickly. When the system decides an app’s process is cached and no longer needed, the process sits in RAM without doing work. The cached apps freezer goes one step further: it suspends the threads of those cached processes so they cannot use the CPU, but the app stays resident.

The feature is available on Android 11 (API level 30) and higher. From Android 14 (API level 34), the system waits 10 seconds after a process enters the cached state before freezing it. A frozen process is thawed when something raises its importance, such as an incoming intent, a job service, or you returning to the app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe benefit is avoiding a cold start. A frozen app that you reopen comes back from memory rather than being launched from scratch. The Android Open Source Project reports that, on supported Android 14+ devices, keeping more apps cached this way can reduce cold starts by up to 30%, with the reduction scaling with total device RAM. That figure measures app launch speed. It is not a battery measurement, and it should not be read as one.

Keep the feature distinct from three other actions that look similar:
- Force stop ends an app’s processes entirely.
- Uninstalling removes the app.
- Clearing storage or cache deletes data the app has saved. It does not change whether a process is frozen.
Turning it on and checking that it works
Supported builds expose the toggle in Developer options. The menu path is:
- Open Settings > About phone and tap Build number seven times until Android confirms that Developer options are enabled.
- Go back to Settings > System > Developer options. On some phones the path differs slightly, so search Settings for “Suspend execution for cached apps” if it is not in that location.
- Turn on Suspend execution for cached apps.
If your phone does not show the toggle, the feature may be unavailable on your build, because it depends on kernel support (cgroup v2) and device configuration. AOSP also documents a configuration-level switch, activity_manager_native_boot use_freezer, set to true. Changing that requires a developer environment and is not something most readers should attempt.

To confirm the setting’s state from a computer with USB debugging enabled, run:
adb shell device_config get activity_manager_native_boot use_freezerreturns the configuration value.adb shell dumpsys activity | grep -A 20 "Apps frozen:"lists the processes currently frozen. An empty or missing list means nothing is frozen at that moment, which can be normal if no apps have been cached for long enough.
What is established about battery life
Android’s documentation says that CPU consumption by cached apps is minimized, “leading to significant battery savings.” That is a qualitative statement about the mechanism. It does not say how much charge a typical phone saves, and it does not account for the apps, usage, or hardware in any particular test.
A reader question in a public Android discussion asks, “Did it help you in anyway with battery life?” The answers in that thread are anecdotes, and so is any single week of results. The reasons are practical. Battery drain depends on screen-on time, network signal, brightness, which apps you use, whether they update, and temperature. A week’s average can shift because of any of these, and a freezer toggle is only one of many moving parts.

So a fair reading of a personal result is that it may reflect the freezer, or it may reflect how you used the phone that week. Only a controlled comparison can separate the two.

How to run a one-week comparison that means something
If you want to test the setting on your own phone, change one thing at a time and record the conditions for each period.
- Same device and build. Note the phone model and the exact Android version and build number, and do not update the OS during the test.
- Same apps. Record the installed apps and avoid installing, removing, or updating them between periods.
- Matched usage. Keep roughly the same screen-on time, messaging, navigation, and media habits, or log them daily so you can account for differences.
- Same conditions. Hold brightness, network type, and battery saver settings constant, and note any days of unusually hot weather or heavy signal problems.
- Clear start and end points. Record battery percentage at fixed times and check the battery usage screen (Settings > Battery) for the apps using the most power in each period.
- Alternating periods. Running the setting on, then off, then on again reduces the chance that one unusual stretch of use decides the result.
Report the results with those conditions attached. A figure without them describes your week, not the feature.

Trade-offs and what to watch for
Freezing suspends every thread in a cached process, so an app cannot do CPU work while frozen. The freezer is not a blanket stop for all background activity. Some processes are exempt, including those holding certain blocking file locks and some relationships marked with BIND_WAIVE_PRIORITY.
AOSP notes that apps which expect background work while cached may fail or behave unexpectedly. Watch for these symptoms after enabling the setting:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Messages, alarms, or sync that arrive late or not at all, especially in apps that depend on background timers.
- Apps that crash or reset when you return to them after a long gap.
- Downloads or uploads that pause and do not resume.
If an app behaves badly, turn the setting off first, then check whether the problem persists. That isolates the freezer from other causes.

Unused apps are a separate feature
Android’s unused-app optimization is a different system that works on a longer timescale. For apps you have not used for a long time, Android can delete temporary files, revoke permissions, stop background running, and stop notifications. You can review these apps under Settings > Apps > Unused apps, where you can also turn off Pause app activity if unused for a specific app. Google’s help page on this is Manage unused apps on your Android device.
The two features can both affect battery use, but they work differently. The freezer changes the state of processes that are already cached. The unused-app system changes how apps you rarely open are treated. A week-long test of the freezer does not tell you anything about unused-app settings, and the reverse is also true.
