Google provides the operating system and Gemini-powered XR features, while Samsung’s Galaxy XR became the first shipping Android XR device in the United States on October 21, 2025, at $1,799.99. The wider platform is moving toward wired, audio and display glasses, but most of those products remain announced or planned rather than generally available.
What is Android XR?
Android XR is Google’s operating system for extended-reality hardware. XR is the umbrella term for virtual reality, augmented reality, mixed reality and spatial-computing experiences. Google’s platform combines Android applications with spatial windows, immersive environments and Gemini assistance that can use voice, visual and environmental context subject to permissions, software, network, account and regional availability.

Therefore, saying “Android XR launched in 2025” is broadly correct only if it means the commercial launch through Galaxy XR. The platform announcement happened in 2024, and the glasses strategy is still unfolding in 2026.
Samsung Galaxy XR: the first Android XR device
Samsung, Google and Qualcomm developed Galaxy XR together. Samsung supplies the headset hardware and One UI XR experience; Google supplies Android XR, Google services and Gemini; Qualcomm provides the XR chipset and platform technology.
Price and availability
The verified U.S. model has 256GB of storage and is listed at $1,799.99 on Samsung’s U.S. store, checked August 18, 2026. See the official purchase page. This is a U.S. price, not a worldwide price.
Display and tracking hardware
- Dual micro-OLED displays at 3,552 × 3,840 pixels per eye.
- 60Hz, 72Hz default and 90Hz refresh-rate modes.
- 109-degree horizontal and 100-degree vertical field of view.
- Approximately 545 grams, with a separate battery pack.
- Eye, hand and head tracking, plus voice and gesture interaction.
These specifications come from Samsung’s launch materials and product information; comfort depends on fit, face shape and how long the headset is worn.
Apps, Gemini and spatial features
Galaxy XR runs Android applications alongside XR-optimized experiences. Samsung highlights Google Maps, YouTube, Google Photos, passthrough viewing, Circle to Search, sports viewing and AI-assisted gaming. Users can place multiple productivity windows in a spatial workspace, watch content on a large virtual screen, explore locations, turn ordinary photos and videos into more spatial-looking experiences, and ask Gemini about visible objects or digital content.
Samsung says Android apps work out of the box, but its product information also warns that some applications may have limited functionality or may not work properly. Compatibility is therefore not the same as a purpose-built XR interface.
Accessories and ownership costs
Controllers, a travel case and prescription-lens inserts are sold separately. Samsung’s launch announcement listed the controllers and travel case at $249.99 each; confirm live prices on the accessories page. Prescription KODAK lenses are supplied through EssilorLuxottica/EyeBuyDirect.
What Galaxy XR can do
Entertainment
Passthrough lets you see the physical room while using virtual screens. The headset can support large-screen video, immersive content and sports-viewing layouts without a physical television or monitor.
Work and multitasking
Spatial windows let users arrange several Android apps around them. This can provide a portable multi-screen workspace, although ordinary phone apps may still have flat layouts and controls designed for touchscreens.
Search, maps and visual assistance
Hand-based Circle to Search, Google Maps and Gemini make the headset useful for asking questions about digital content or objects in view. Camera, microphone and environmental permissions affect what each feature can access.
Gaming and creative media
Galaxy XR supports XR games, controller input and Gemini assistance. Google Photos and Samsung’s AI features can create more spatial-looking presentations from conventional media, but the result is not identical to footage captured with a dedicated spatial camera.

What comes after Galaxy XR?
XREAL AURA: planned wired XR glasses
Google’s developer newsletter identifies XREAL AURA as the first wired XR glasses built on Android XR, with arrival planned for fall 2026. No verified current price or confirmed general-retail date was provided. Check XREAL’s site for vendor announcements.

Audio and display glasses
Audio glasses are intended to focus on microphones, speakers, cameras and Gemini without a display. Display glasses add optical visual information. Google presents both as platform categories rather than as a broadly available consumer lineup, so battery life, pricing, regional availability and final features remain device-specific.
Developer hardware
Google’s Catalyst Program is intended to provide selected developers with pre-release hardware. Participation is not the same as retail availability.

- Test standard Android behavior separately from spatial, projected and immersive experiences.

Compatibility and requirements to check
Phone and account integration
The Galaxy XR mobile app is distributed through the Galaxy Store and is not supported on tablets, third-party devices or iOS, according to Samsung’s support documentation. Some setup, notifications or phone-linked functions may therefore require a compatible Galaxy phone and Samsung or Google account.
AI privacy
Gemini-enabled XR features can involve information from cameras, microphones and the surrounding environment. Before use, review camera and microphone permissions, voice-assistant controls, account and regional availability, cloud-assisted processing disclosures, and ways to disable or limit AI features. Be considerate of bystanders who may be recorded or analyzed without wearing the headset.

Software compatibility
Android app support provides breadth, not a guarantee of spatial layouts, comfortable typography, controller support or immersive modes. Developers and buyers should distinguish “runs” from “optimized for XR.”

Android XR has crossed from platform announcement to commercial reality through Samsung Galaxy XR, launched in the U.S. on October 21, 2025. The headset is available at $1,799.99 for the 256GB model, while Google’s larger ambition is an Android-based family of headsets and glasses. Today’s purchase decision is therefore about Galaxy XR; the promised glasses ecosystem is a reason to watch the platform, not proof that a broad glasses lineup is already on sale.
