Android updates reduce some risks to mobile banking by fixing software issues and improving device security, but they cannot prevent every scam or account takeover. Check your phone’s Android security patch date, keep app protections on, and confirm your bank’s own device requirements before deciding whether an older phone is still suitable.
How Android updates help protect mobile banking
A banking app runs on top of Android and the phone’s underlying software. Security updates address possible vulnerabilities in that software, while version upgrades can also add or improve device-safety features. Google describes ongoing updates as a way to fix possible issues and upgrade device safety—not as a guarantee that a device or bank account is secure. Google’s Android update guidance explains how to check a device’s update status.

That distinction matters because mobile banking risk is broader than the operating system. A patched phone can still be exposed to phishing, scam calls, stolen passwords, unsafe app installations, or social engineering. In a May 12, 2026 Google Android Security post, Android Security & Privacy director Eugene Liderman warned: “Scammers are impersonating financial institutions to trick users into transferring money or revealing their account information.” Updates reduce certain technical risks; they do not make deceptive messages or calls trustworthy.

Check the Android version and patch dates
- Find the device details: Open Settings → About phone (or About tablet) → Android version. Note the Android version, Android security update date, and Google Play system update date. Labels and paths can vary by manufacturer and device. Google’s instructions cover the status fields.
- Check for an available update: Open Settings → System → Software updates and follow any on-screen instructions. Some devices use different menu names or locations. Google says most system updates and security patches install automatically, but checking the status can show whether an update is waiting.
- Check support for the exact model: Update schedules vary by device, manufacturer, and carrier. Consult the manufacturer’s support information for the specific handset, or ask the manufacturer or carrier when updates are expected. An Android version number alone does not tell you whether the latest patch available for that device is installed.
Know which kind of update you are looking at
| Update or protection | What it means for banking | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Android version update | A major operating-system release or version upgrade. Availability depends on the device and its manufacturer. | That every handset receives the same release at the same time, or that a bank requires the newest Android version. |
| Android security update | A device security patch status shown in Settings. Google advises that getting the latest security update available for a device requires using the latest Android version available for that device. | That the phone is current if its manufacturer has stopped issuing updates. |
| Google Play system update and system services | Google says system-services updates can update Android and key services such as Google Play Store and Google Play services; some are delivered in separate packages and can include security fixes, bug fixes, and features. Google’s system-services update overview describes these updates. | That a Play system update replaces every full OS release or manufacturer-issued security patch. |
| Google Play Protect | App scanning that checks apps regardless of download source and can detect or disable harmful apps. It complements operating-system updates. Google Play Protect help explains the feature. | That every OS vulnerability is patched or that app scanning can prevent phishing and social engineering. |
Keep app and account protections in place
- Keep Google Play Protect enabled and install your bank’s app from the bank’s official Google Play listing. Google says Play Protect checks apps from outside Google Play as well as apps from the store. Its help page describes scanning and protection.
- Avoid installing banking apps from unfamiliar websites or links, and treat unexpected requests to transfer money or disclose account details as suspicious. A current patch cannot verify who is contacting you.
- Use separate, hard-to-guess passwords for important accounts and follow your bank’s account-security guidance. These practices address risks that software updates cannot resolve.
Google reported that its real-time scanning identified more than 27 million malicious apps from outside Google Play in 2025, and that it blocked 266 million risky installation attempts and addressed 872,000 unique high-risk applications. These are Google-reported ecosystem figures, not independent counts of all Android malware. Google’s 2025 Android and Google Play safety post provides the figures and context.

Google’s 2026 Android security announcement estimated $980 million in annual worldwide losses associated with social engineering scams and financial fraud. That is Google’s estimate, not an independently verified global total. The announcement discusses additional safeguards, including protections for calls with participating banks; such protections do not replace careful handling of suspicious contact.
Check your bank’s own phone requirements
There is no single Android version requirement that applies to every bank. Each bank sets its own compatibility and device rules, and those rules can change. Check the bank’s current mobile-app support page or contact the bank before assuming an older phone is accepted.

For example, Hilltop Bank’s U.S. policy dated March 2025 lists Android 11 as its minimum and says a device that cannot upgrade to that minimum may be prevented from installing or using its mobile banking app. The policy also supports only an unmodified manufacturer operating system and excludes rooted devices. This is one bank’s dated policy, not a general Android banking standard. Hilltop Bank’s mobile banking information is the source for that example.
What to do when a phone stops receiving security updates
First compare the exact model’s latest security patch date with the manufacturer’s published update-support period, then check whether your bank still supports the device and whether it requires an unmodified operating system. If updates have ended, the phone may continue to run apps, but it will not receive future manufacturer security patches; that leaves known and newly discovered software issues without those updates.

A replacement may be sensible if the device no longer receives patches, cannot run the bank’s supported app, or fails the bank’s device rules. Before buying, verify the specific model’s current manufacturer security-update commitment and your bank’s compatibility requirements. No particular phone is universally the right choice: update support, bank eligibility, cost, and the inconvenience of changing devices all matter.
