The best VPN for an Android TV box is one that supports your exact device and Android version, works with its Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection, and offers the controls you need. NordVPN, Proton VPN, and Private Internet Access publish Android TV or box setup guidance, but the available documentation does not establish an overall performance winner. Check compatibility before subscribing; a VPN location can change the apparent connection location, but it does not guarantee access to a particular streaming catalog.
Check your box and Android version first
“Android TV box” covers devices with different hardware, operating-system versions, app stores, and network behavior. Confirm the model and Android version in the device settings, then check the VPN provider’s current requirements. Android TV and Google TV devices are not the same as Fire TV devices, and older Chromecast-only devices may need a different setup.

If the provider’s compatibility page does not cover your box, confirm support with the provider before paying. A listing for Android TV does not establish that every generic Android box will run the app.

Native app and remote-friendly sign-in
When supported, installing the official app from the device’s app store is the most direct documented route. Consider whether its sign-in and controls are manageable with a TV remote. Connection controls and protocols
Compare features that affect how the app behaves on a TV. Proton documents startup auto-connect and WireGuard UDP/TCP and Stealth protocol options. PIA documents startup controls, per-app VPN settings, and WireGuard and OpenVPN options. These are provider-documented features, not independent tests of speed or reliability. Plan limits and streaming expectations
Proton says its free plan can run on Android TV, but streaming support is available only on paid plans. Check the plan terms that apply to your account before subscribing. Connecting through a selected VPN location changes the route and apparent location of your connection; it does not ensure that a streaming service will accept the connection or show a particular library. Results can depend on the streaming app, account, provider, location, and service rules.

The provider setup materials cited here do not establish comparable speed, uptime, or streaming-unblocking results, so they cannot support a tested ranking or a “fastest” pick.
Install a VPN app directly on the box
- Open the device’s app store, search for the VPN provider’s official app, and install it. If the app is not listed, check the provider’s device compatibility information before trying another route.
- Open the app and sign in. Some providers document QR-code or remote-code sign-in, which can be easier than entering credentials with a TV remote.
- Approve the Android VPN connection request when the device displays it. Android’s general VPN guidance explains this permission step, though it is not specific to TV boxes. Google’s Android VPN help
- Choose a nearby or recommended server for a general connection, or select a location if that is what you need. The choice is not a guarantee that a particular streaming service will work.
If the app is unavailable: consider sideloading carefully
Some providers document installing an Android TV APK when the app is unavailable in the device’s store. NordVPN’s instructions include enabling “Unknown sources” and installing its APK. This route is not a guarantee of compatibility: check that the provider supports your exact device and Android version, and download the installer only from the provider’s official source. When router setup makes sense
A VPN-compatible router is an alternative when the box cannot run a supported app or when you want VPN routing for multiple devices on the network. Configure the VPN connection on a compatible router, then connect the box to that network. The router must support VPN connections; setup can be more complicated and may affect speed. Which option fits your situation?
- Use a direct app if your box and Android version are supported and the app is available in its app store.
- Consider an official APK only if the provider documents that route and your device meets its compatibility requirements.
- Use a VPN-capable router if native app support is missing or you need VPN routing for more than the TV box, and your existing router supports it.
