Google calls TalkBack “the Google screen reader included on Android devices”; “VoiceOver” is the name many people use by mistake when looking for Android’s screen reader. Find TalkBack under Settings > Accessibility. Try the volume-key shortcut first if it is set up; otherwise use Google Assistant or switch it off in Settings. Google’s TalkBack instructions cover these options.
Try the volume-key shortcut first
Press and hold both volume keys for a few seconds. If the TalkBack shortcut is configured, the phone should announce that TalkBack is off. If nothing happens, move on to another method: shortcut availability and setup vary by manufacturer, Android version, and TalkBack version.

Turn off TalkBack with Google Assistant
If Assistant is available and you can speak to the phone, say: “Hey Google, turn off TalkBack.” Listen for its confirmation. If Assistant does not respond or cannot complete the request, use Settings instead.

- Open Settings > Accessibility > TalkBack. On some devices, menu labels or the route may differ.
- Switch off Use TalkBack.
- Select Turn off to confirm, if prompted.
With TalkBack active, touching an item moves focus to it rather than opening it. Swipe left or right with one finger to move focus, then double-tap to activate the focused item. Use two fingers to scroll. Apply that same focus-then-double-tap pattern to Accessibility, TalkBack, the switch, and the confirmation button. Google provides navigation directions for changing the setting while TalkBack is on.

If the phone is locked or you cannot see the screen
Use Google’s lock-screen instructions first. They explain how to use TalkBack gestures to show the screen and enter a PIN or pattern. If those directions do not fit your device, consult the manufacturer’s accessibility instructions or contact its support team; Android menus and behavior are not identical across devices. Google also notes that TalkBack setup and features can vary by manufacturer and software version in its Android accessibility guidance.

After switching TalkBack off, return to Settings > Accessibility > TalkBack and disable the TalkBack shortcut if you do not want to risk activating it by mistake. The shortcut controls may look different on your phone; Google’s TalkBack instructions describe the available settings.
