In Android, system-as-root describes where the root filesystem comes from and how it is mounted during boot. Here, “root” means the top-level filesystem directory—not superuser access for the device owner. The exact arrangement depends on Android release, update design, partition layout and device implementation.
What system-as-root means
Android needs a root filesystem—the starting point of its filesystem tree—when it boots. In the system-as-root arrangement described by the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), the root filesystem’s contents are combined with system contents in system.img, which is used as the root filesystem. This is a filesystem and boot-layout choice; by itself, it neither grants nor describes user-level root privileges.

The term is release-sensitive. AOSP describes Android 9 and Android 10 differently, so a statement about one release should not be treated as a timeless rule for every Android device.
How the Android 9 and Android 10 arrangements differ
Android 9
For Android 9, AOSP documents that setting BOARD_BUILD_SYSTEM_ROOT_IMAGE=true merges the root filesystem into system.img, which is then mounted as rootfs. This flag describes that build arrangement; it is not a general test for whether an arbitrary device has system-as-root.

Android 10
In AOSP’s Android 10 description, the build always merges the target system and root output into system.img, as though the system-root-image option were enabled. The described boot flow still uses a ramdisk: first-stage init runs there and handles mounting where needed. AOSP ties the Android 10 layout to system-only OTA support, stating that devices running Android 10 must use it to enable system-only updates to system and product without changing other partitions.
Why A/B, non-A/B and dynamic partitions matter
“Does this device use system-as-root?” is not always enough to describe its boot behavior. The relevant answer can depend on the update scheme, partition arrangement and whether the question concerns normal boot, recovery or an OTA.

- DISPLAY: Immersive viewing on a 6.7-inch super-bright 120Hz display with powerful stereo speakers and Bass Boost for cinematic entertainment.

- PERFORMANCE: Lightning-fast 5G connectivity paired with a powerful processor and RAM Boost for smooth multitasking.
- BATTERY LIFE: Long-lasting 5000mAh battery with TurboPower charging technology delivers hours of power in minutes.
- A/B update layouts: AOSP’s comparison says A/B devices already mount system as rootfs in the described arrangement.
- Non-A/B layouts: Older non-A/B devices commonly mounted system at
/system. AOSP says those layouts need to change to support system-only OTAs. - Dynamic partitions: These use a
superpartition to hold metadata for logical partitions. In AOSP’s Android 10 implementation guidance, the kernel cannot interpretsuper; first-stage init in the ramdisk reads the metadata and creates virtual block devices, including the logical system partition.
That same Android 10 guidance says devices using dynamic partitions must not use system-as-root in the implementation it describes, because first-stage init mounts system from the ramdisk. Treat this as release-specific implementation guidance, not a blanket claim about every present-day Android device.
What changes when a non-A/B device migrates
AOSP’s migration guidance describes several interdependent changes rather than a single image switch:

- Change the boot and system image arrangement to use the intended root-filesystem layout.
- Set up dm-verity, Android’s mechanism for verifying the integrity of protected blocks.
- Remove dependencies on device-specific files or directories in the old root folders, since their location or availability can change under the new arrangement.
- Keep recovery separate from boot on non-A/B devices. Without a fallback slot, a failed boot-partition update could otherwise leave no separate recovery path.
These are platform migration considerations, not instructions for modifying a consumer device. Device-specific partition and recovery designs require the manufacturer’s documentation.
How system-as-root relates to DSU
Dynamic System Updates (DSU) are related through Android’s partition architecture, but they are a separate feature. Android Developers describes DSU as downloading a trusted Generic System Image (GSI) or other system image, creating a dynamic partition, loading the image and booting it as a guest system. It is intended to let a supported device run a separate system image without replacing its regular installation. DSU requires dynamic-partition support and trusted signing; whether it is available depends on the device manufacturer.

What to check for a particular device
Platform documentation explains the possible layouts, but it does not establish the current partition arrangement of every phone or tablet. For a model-specific answer, check the manufacturer’s documentation and distinguish these questions:
- Which Android release is running, and did the device launch with it or upgrade later?
- Does the device use A/B slots, non-A/B updates, or dynamic partitions?
- Are you asking about the normal boot path, the recovery environment, an OTA, or DSU support?
- Does the manufacturer document the device’s particular implementation or feature availability?
Do not infer a device’s layout just from its Android version: the release-level AOSP descriptions do not substitute for model-specific implementation details.
